The 6% Interest Rate Cap
Freedom Mortgage SCRA Benefits: Where to Send Your Orders
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
People search for a Freedom Mortgage SCRA benefits page and a Freedom Mortgage SCRA PDF. Neither exists. On August 15, 2026, freedommortgage.com’s sitemap listed 537 URLs and not one of them is an SCRA or military-benefits page. The company’s entire published position on the SCRA is one answer in its servicing FAQ, filed under payments: “The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act provides certain protections while you are on active military duty and for a period after active duty ends. Please send a copy of your orders to Freedom Mortgage Corporation, P.O. Box 50485, Indianapolis, IN 46250-0485.”
That is thin, but it is enough to act on, because the benefit itself does not come from Freedom. A mortgage you closed before active duty is capped at 6% for your service plus one year under 50 U.S.C. § 3937, with the excess forgiven, and it cannot be foreclosed without a court order for that same window under § 3953. Freedom’s job is to apply the law once you give notice. Your job is to give notice in a way you can prove.
What Freedom Mortgage puts in writing
| Item | Statutory SCRA | Freedom Mortgage (verified August 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Rate on a pre-service mortgage | 6% cap, service plus one year | No figure printed; the 6% ceiling applies |
| Foreclosure during protection | Court order required | Not mentioned on any Freedom page |
| SCRA filing route | Written notice plus orders | Mail orders to P.O. Box 50485, Indianapolis, IN 46250-0485 |
| Phone | Not required | Customer Care 855-690-5900, Mon to Fri 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sat 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET |
| Processing time | Not set by statute | None stated for SCRA |
| Dedicated SCRA department or email | Not required | None published |
The only turnaround Freedom prints anywhere in that FAQ is for insurance-claim paperwork: mail and faxes are processed in two business days when the loan number is on every page. It states no timeline for SCRA requests, so do not assume one. Size what the cap is worth on your balance in the savings calculator, and if you have been paying above 6% on a covered loan, the refund guide covers getting it back.
Sending the request
File your SCRA request with Freedom Mortgage
- Confirm the mortgage closed before your active-duty start date. A loan that started with another lender and was later transferred to Freedom still counts; the origination date is what matters.
- Get a copy of your orders (or a commander’s letter, which § 3937(b) also accepts).
- Write the request. The letter generator produces a notice that cites § 3937, names the loan, and asks for the retroactive adjustment. Put your Freedom loan number on every page, including the orders.
- Mail the packet to Freedom Mortgage Corporation, P.O. Box 50485, Indianapolis, IN 46250-0485, the address Freedom’s FAQ gives for orders. Use a method with tracking and keep the receipt.
- Ten business days later, call 855-690-5900 (Mon to Fri 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sat 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET) or send a message from your online account to confirm receipt, and ask for the applied rate and effective date in writing.
- Read the next statement for a rate at or below 6%, a lower principal-and-interest payment, and a credit reaching back to your first day of duty. Watch that it holds through separation plus one year.
Where Freedom Mortgage borrowers lose the cap
The Indianapolis box is a general-purpose mailbox. Freedom’s FAQ and contact page list P.O. Box 50485 for payoff statements and address changes too, so an unlabeled envelope with orders inside can land in the wrong queue. Write “SCRA request, loan number XXXX” on the letter and on the envelope. Then confirm by phone. Under § 3937(b)(2) the cap runs from the date you were called to duty once the notice does arrive, and § 3937(b)(1) gives you until 180 days after you leave service to deliver it, so a lost letter does not forfeit the benefit. It does cost you months of overpayment you then have to claw back.
Loss mitigation is a different door, and a different benefit. Freedom’s payment-help page routes hardship cases to a Hardship Assistance Request, emailed to LossMitigation@FreedomMortgage.com. That is forbearance, modification, or repayment-plan territory. It does not lower your rate to 6% and it forgives nothing. Ask for the SCRA cap first. If deployment breaks your budget on top of that, then ask about assistance, in writing, so the two are not confused.
A VA streamline refinance ends the protection. Freedom’s main navigation leads with the VA IRRRL, and for a borrower on active duty that offer is a trap: the refinance pays off the pre-service loan and creates a new one dated during service, which § 3937 and § 3953 do not reach. Run the numbers on a capped 6% loan before you sign anything. The mortgage servicer guide walks through the tradeoff.
Transfers into Freedom need a second look. Freedom keeps a dedicated page for borrowers whose loans transfer in, and it promises your rate and payment stay the same. A capped SCRA rate should ride along. If your first Freedom statement shows the contract rate instead, send the prior servicer’s confirmation with your orders to the same box, and if Freedom does not fix it, use the escalation playbook. See how Freedom compares with servicers that do publish an SCRA desk on the bank leaderboard.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3937

Frequently asked questions
Where do I send SCRA orders to Freedom Mortgage?
By mail, to Freedom Mortgage Corporation, P.O. Box 50485, Indianapolis, IN 46250-0485. That is the only SCRA route Freedom prints, in the answer to "I am currently serving or will be called to active military duty. What should I do?" on its servicing FAQ (verified August 2026). Freedom publishes no SCRA email, fax, or upload path. Put your loan number on every page, add a written request that cites 50 U.S.C. 3937, and keep proof of mailing.
What is the Freedom Mortgage SCRA phone number?
Freedom publishes no SCRA-specific line. Its Customer Care number is 855-690-5900, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern (verified August 2026). Use it to confirm your mailed orders arrived and to ask for the applied rate and effective date in writing. You can also message Customer Care from your online Freedom Mortgage account.
Is there a Freedom Mortgage SCRA benefits PDF?
Not on freedommortgage.com as of August 2026. The site sitemap lists no SCRA or military-benefits page or document, and the only SCRA text is the FAQ answer above. If someone hands you a PDF, check its date and compare it to the statute; the rights come from 50 U.S.C. 3937 and 3953, not from a brochure.
What rate does Freedom Mortgage give under the SCRA?
Freedom prints no number. That means the statutory ceiling applies: a mortgage originated before your active duty cannot bear more than 6% during your service and for one year after, and interest above 6% is forgiven rather than deferred (50 U.S.C. 3937(a)). If your Freedom loan is already at or below 6%, the cap changes nothing, and the foreclosure shield in 3953 is the protection that matters.
My loan just transferred to Freedom Mortgage. Does my SCRA rate carry over?
It should. Freedom states on its transfer page that your interest rate and your principal-and-interest payment stay the same when a loan moves to it (verified August 2026), and the SCRA cap attaches to the loan, not to the servicer. Transfers are still where capped rates get dropped, so read your first Freedom statement, and if the old rate came back, mail your orders and your prior confirmation to the Indianapolis box right away.
