The 6% Interest Rate Cap
M&T Bank SCRA: 1-855-350-SCRA and One Request for Every Account
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
M&T Bank gives the SCRA its own page, its own team, and its own vanity number: 1-855-350-SCRA (7272), answered by the “M&T Bank SCRA Servicing Team” Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET, with a separate international line at 302-934-4872 and a mailbox at scraservicing@mtb.com (all read on mtb.com, August 2026). It publishes no rate below the statutory 6%. Its distinguishing feature is administrative: one request, the page says, is enough to identify every account M&T owns or services, and a friend or family member can file it for you.
The covered list is broad for a regional bank: mortgages, home equity lines of credit, student loans, credit cards and auto loans, marine and other installment loans, and lines of credit. A $35,000 pre-service boat loan at 9.5% capped to 6% forgives about $1,225 a year; a $12,000 card at 26% forgives about $2,400. Total your own accounts in the savings calculator, and if the accounts were open during a past activation you never filed for, start with the refund guide.
What M&T puts in writing

|---|---|---|
| Rate cap on pre-service debt | 6% APR | 6%, “inclusive of certain fees,” no lower rate published |
| Eligibility test | Debt incurred before military service | ”Existing M&T loan that was disbursed prior to active duty” |
| Covered products | Most pre-service obligations | Mortgages, HELOCs, student loans, cards, auto, marine and other installment loans, lines of credit |
| Real-property loans after service | Cap runs one year past service | ”12 months beyond the date your military service ends” |
| Filing deadline | 180 days after release from service | Same, stated on the page |
| Number of requests | One written notice per creditor | ”Only one request is needed” for all M&T accounts |
| Who may file | Servicemember (or on their behalf) | “A friend or family member may submit the request on your behalf” |

The rate, the forgiveness, and the 180-day window all come from § 3937. M&T restates them accurately and adds the operational promises above.
Getting the 6% applied
File your SCRA request with M&T Bank
- List every M&T account disbursed before your active-duty start date: mortgage, HELOC, student loan, card, auto, marine or other installment loan, line of credit, and any safe deposit box. M&T asks for enough information to identify each one.
- Write the request and attach your active-duty orders. The letter generator drafts a § 3937 letter you can send as-is. If a spouse or family member is filing for you, have them sign and add their contact details.
- Send it one way: email scraservicing@mtb.com, fax 1-888-378-8444, mail M&T Bank, P.O. Box 1850, Buffalo, NY 14240, or deliver it in person at a full-service branch. Keep the sent copy or receipt.
- Call the SCRA Servicing Team at 1-855-350-SCRA (7272) (international 302-934-4872), Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET, to confirm receipt and ask which fees are inside the cap on each account. M&T publishes no processing time, so ask for one.
- Check the next statements for 6% on every listed account and the credit back to your duty start date. Any account the team missed goes back in a second note referencing the first.
Where M&T borrowers lose the cap
“Disbursed prior to active duty” is M&T’s test, and it matters for lines of credit. The page’s language keys eligibility to when the loan was disbursed, not merely when the account was opened. On a HELOC or a line of credit, that raises the question of draws taken after your start date. Ask the SCRA Servicing Team how it treats those draws on your account and get the answer in writing; the revolving credit guide explains what the statute says.
“Certain fees” is a hedge; make M&T name them. The statute counts fees and service charges as interest, bona fide insurance excepted. M&T’s phrasing leaves room, so ask specifically about late fees, annual fees, and over-limit fees, and compare the answer to your first post-cap statement.
One request does not mean one account number is enough. M&T promises to sweep every account it owns or services, but it also asks you to identify each loan or safe deposit box. Do both: rely on the sweep, and list what you know. That protects a serviced-only mortgage or an older card that might not surface.
Non-SCRA questions go elsewhere. M&T states that its telephone banking line, 1-800-724-2440, handles non-SCRA matters. If a general representative cannot see your request, redirect to 1-855-350-SCRA rather than starting over. The 180-day post-service deadline in § 3937(b) does not pause while you are on hold. If M&T declines an eligible account, the escalation playbook is next, and the bank leaderboard shows how M&T’s program compares.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3937
Maximum rate of interest on debts incurred before military service: read the statute.
Frequently asked questions
How do I request SCRA benefits from M&T Bank?
Submit a written request with your active-duty orders one of four ways: email scraservicing@mtb.com, fax 1-888-378-8444, mail P.O. Box 1850, Buffalo, NY 14240, or hand it in at a full-service M&T branch (verified on mtb.com, August 2026). Questions go to the SCRA Servicing Team at 1-855-350-SCRA (7272), or 302-934-4872 from outside the U.S., Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.
Do I have to file separately for each M&T account?
No. M&T's page says only one request is needed for it to identify all accounts owned and serviced by M&T Bank. Still list every account you know of, including a safe deposit box, because the page also asks you to provide enough information to identify your loan or safe deposit box.
What does "inclusive of certain fees" mean at M&T?
M&T states you may be entitled to a 6% interest rate cap "inclusive of certain fees" on a loan disbursed before active duty. The statute at 50 U.S.C. 3937(d) defines interest to include service charges, renewal charges, fees, and other charges except bona fide insurance. M&T does not list which fees it counts, so ask the SCRA Servicing Team to confirm in writing how each fee on your account is treated.
How long does the M&T mortgage cap last after I leave service?
M&T's page states that the SCRA requires a lender to extend interest rate and fee benefits on obligations secured by real property for 12 months beyond the date your military service ends. That matches 50 U.S.C. 3937(a)(1)(A) for mortgages and home equity secured by your home. Other loans return to the contract rate when service ends.
Can a family member submit my M&T request?
Yes. M&T says a friend or family member may submit the request on your behalf. The request still needs your active-duty orders and enough detail to identify your accounts, and it must reach M&T within 180 days from the end date of your military service.
