What a legal assistance office can do for an SCRA problem

Every office advises on the Act at no cost: the 6% cap on pre-service debt (50 U.S.C. § 3937), ending a lease or vehicle lease on orders (§ 3955), stopping a default judgment or getting a stay (§§ 3931, 3932), foreclosure and repossession (§§ 3952, 3953), and eviction (§ 3951). The office can write to the company on official letterhead, which resolves most rate-cap and lease disputes without a lawsuit, and refer you to a private lawyer when it cannot act; it cannot represent you in civil court. Eligibility: active duty and dependents, Guard and Reserve on orders, retirees and dependents, with priority rules set by each office.

Bring your orders (or a commander's letter), the account or lease documents, any letters the company sent, and a timeline. For a rate cap, bring the written request and the refund estimate; for a lease, the termination date and proof of notice; if you were sued, every court paper and the stay and default-judgment guides.
