South Carolina vehicle tax

The South Carolina military car tax exemption

South Carolina charges personal property tax on vehicles on a vehicle every year. If you are stationed here on orders and your home of record is another state, 50 U.S.C. § 4001 says that car is not South Carolina's to tax. South Carolina publishes no statewide form for the claim, which is where most people stall. Here is who actually grants it and what they want in hand.

What South Carolina wants from you

How the South Carolina claim actually works

South Carolina taxes vehicles annually through the county auditor, and a nonresident servicemember stationed in the state does not owe it. The claim is made to the auditor of the county where the vehicle is registered, not to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, and not to the DMV.

The document set is tighter than most states in this cluster, and the freshness rule is the part people miss. The LES must be current, meaning dated within the last three months, and it must show a home of record outside South Carolina. A January LES presented in July is not current.

South Carolina also accepts a letter from your commanding officer stating that you are ordered to South Carolina as an alternative to the orders themselves, which is useful when the orders are classified, lengthy, or still in the system.

The exemption does not persist. Application for exemption must be made annually, so a member who filed successfully in their first year and assumed the flag stayed on the account will get a bill in year two.

What trips people up here

On spouses

The South Carolina materials read for this page cover the servicemember and do not set out a separate spouse route for this tax. That is not the same as a refusal. The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act sits inside 50 U.S.C. § 4001, so ask the office named above how it handles a spouse-owned vehicle rather than assuming either answer.
