What happened
On June 24, 2025 Greystar Management Services, LLC agreed to a settlement resolving allegations that it imposed early termination charges on servicemembers who ended residential leases early after receiving military relocation orders.
The allegation that distinguishes this case: DOJ said Greystar did it in part by using software that automatically imposed early termination charges without regard to military status. The violation was built into the billing system rather than left to a leasing agent’s judgment.
Section 3955 lets a servicemember end a residential lease on qualifying orders, and once the notice is delivered the landlord cannot charge an early termination fee for it.
