State Farm Military Discount: Louisiana Only of 51 Discount Pages
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
State Farm has a military discount in one state. On October 10, 2026, its national auto discounts page and all 51 of its state and District of Columbia discount pages were read; the words “Military Personnel Discount” appear only on the Louisiana page, and Louisiana law requires that discount of every authorized auto insurer. Two other states carry a service-linked course credit. The rest of the country gets State Farm’s general discounts and nothing tied to service. The generic advice on repricing a parked car, by how you own it, lives on the deployment car insurance page. This page maps what State Farm itself prints.
Where State Farm mentions service, state by state
| State page | What it says | Percentage printed |
|---|---|---|
| Louisiana | ”Military Personnel Discount” for an active duty member, or an active reservist in the Louisiana Air or Army National Guard, who “completes the Louisiana application for military discount” | None; state law and rule set 25% |
| Kentucky | Defensive driving discount “also extended to a principal driver of any age” who completed a U.S. Armed Forces defensive driving course in the past five years | None |
| Montana | Defensive driving discount open to members of the Montana National Guard, any age, after a Highway Traffic Safety Program in the last three years | None |
| Massachusetts, Rhode Island | ”We do not currently offer rate quotes” | Not applicable |
| The other 46 pages and the national page | No military, Guard, Reserve, or veteran wording | Not applicable |
All 51 pages read October 10, 2026 on statefarm.com.
State Farm’s footer on each state page says discounts and their availability “may vary by state.” If you are not in Louisiana, Kentucky, or Montana, State Farm’s own pages show nothing for service members, so ask your agent which of the listed discounts you qualify for instead.
Louisiana: a 25% discount set by statute, claimed by form
La. R.S. 22:1482, read on the Louisiana Legislature’s site October 10, 2026, says every auto insurer authorized in the state “shall provide” active duty military, military reservist, and Louisiana Air and Army National Guard personnel “based in this state” a discount of “twenty-five percent of the premium on any automobile liability insurance policy” covering vehicles they own. State Farm’s Louisiana page states the same benefit without the number and adds the step: file the Louisiana application for military discount.
Read the statute, State Farm’s page, and the state’s rule side by side and the wording gaps show. The statute names “military reservist” as its own category. State Farm’s page says “an active reservist in the Louisiana Air or Army National Guard.” The Department of Insurance’s Regulation 81 (Louisiana Administrative Code Title 37, § 9509 and § 9511, September 2026 edition) decides it: the discount goes to a member “based in this state and serving on full time active duty status” in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Reserve, National Guard, or Coast Guard. A Navy Reserve member on full-time active duty in Louisiana qualifies even though State Farm’s page does not name the Navy Reserve. A drilling reservist or Guard member who is not on full-time duty does not meet that definition. The rule also applies the 25% only to the liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist premium, counts a spouse and young dependents on the same policy, and treats a member deployed out of state or overseas as still based in Louisiana if single, or if a spouse and dependents stay there. The law also says that, except to run these discounts, a deployment of more than six months “shall not be used by any insurer for the classification of risks.” More state rules are on the Louisiana page, and Guard coverage questions under federal law are on the Guard and Reserve page.
Kentucky and Montana: course credits, not discounts
Both are defensive driving discounts that State Farm normally limits to drivers 55 and older. Kentucky opens it to a principal driver of any age who finished a defensive driving course provided by the U.S. Armed Forces within five years. Montana opens it to members of the Montana National Guard who completed a Highway Traffic Safety Program in the last three years. Both pages say a completion certificate must be presented to State Farm. If your unit ran a driver safety course, get the certificate before you leave the unit, because it is your proof.
Parking the car for a deployment
State Farm’s storage article gives the most specific rule it publishes for a car that will sit: in storage 30 days or more, “you may be able to suspend liability and collision coverages and only keep comprehensive coverage.” It adds three conditions. A lender “might require you to have both collision and comprehensive coverage for the life of the loan.” If your state writes to say you need liability or your registration may be suspended, follow the DMV’s storage procedure. And liability and collision go back on before the car leaves storage. A car in a commercial lot is also covered by § 3958, which bars a storage lienholder from selling it during service and for 90 days after without a court order; the storage lien page has the notice to send.
On cancelling, State Farm is cautious: a cancelled policy may create a gap that “could possibly put you in a higher category or may impact future eligibility.” For a car leased before you got 180 days or more of deployment orders, the cleaner exit is the vehicle lease termination under § 3955; the car then comes off the State Farm policy on State Farm’s terms.
PCS and overseas
Two State Farm facts shape a move. Its Massachusetts and Rhode Island discount pages say “We do not currently offer rate quotes” in those states. If orders send you to Hanscom AFB or Naval Station Newport, confirm with an agent that State Farm will write your car there, and price another insurer, before the move. And its rental car guide says U.S.-based auto insurance “may not provide coverage in foreign countries,” with Canada often an exception, and tells you to check your policy’s coverage territory. Ship a car to an overseas station and you need host-country coverage. Taxes on the car at the new station are a separate question; see the military car tax exemption page.
The dollar math, on an illustrative Louisiana policy
State Farm prints no military percentage, so the statute and the state’s rule supply it. Take an illustrative $1,400 annual premium, $700 of it for liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage. Your split is on your declarations page.
| Item | Source of the figure | Annual effect on the illustration |
|---|---|---|
| Louisiana military discount | Statute and Regulation 81: 25% of the liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist premium | $175 off, applied to the $700 share only |
| Drive Safe and Save | State Farm: “up to 30%,” and its footnote says it may exceed 30% | $420 off at 30%, driving data required |
| Kentucky or Montana course credit | No percentage printed | Ask your agent |
The first row follows Regulation 81 as printed in the Office of the State Register’s September 2026 edition of the Louisiana Administrative Code. The Louisiana Department of Insurance’s own site blocked automated reading on October 10, 2026, so confirm the credit on your declarations page.
Get every service-linked State Farm credit
- Louisiana-based: ask your State Farm agent for the Louisiana application for military discount, attach your PCS orders to Louisiana, and check the next declarations page for the credit. Regulation 81, as printed in September 2026, requires a fresh form at each renewal.
- Kentucky or Montana: bring the Armed Forces or Highway Traffic Safety course certificate to your agent.
- Car parked 30 days or more: ask the agent to suspend liability and collision and keep comprehensive. Financed? Get the lender’s required coverages in writing first.
- Leased car and 180 days or more of deployment orders: weigh the § 3955 exit with the lease termination calculator before you store it.
- Orders to Massachusetts, Rhode Island, or overseas: confirm State Farm will cover the car there, or quote a replacement insurer, before the move date.
- Coming home: restore liability and collision before the car leaves storage.

Frequently asked questions
Does State Farm have a military discount?
Only in Louisiana, going by State Farm's own discount pages. On October 10, 2026, State Farm's national auto discounts page and its 51 state and District of Columbia discount pages were read. A "Military Personnel Discount" appears on the Louisiana page alone. It applies when the named insured or registered owner is on active duty or an active reservist in the Louisiana Air or Army National Guard and "completes the Louisiana application for military discount." Louisiana law, R.S. 22:1482, requires every authorized auto insurer to give Louisiana-based active duty, reservist, and Louisiana Guard members 25% of the premium on an auto liability policy, and the state's Regulation 81 limits that to members on full-time active duty.
How much is the State Farm military discount in Louisiana?
State Farm's Louisiana page gives no percentage; it says premiums "may be reduced." The number comes from the statute. La. R.S. 22:1482, read on the Louisiana Legislature's site on October 10, 2026, requires a discount of "twenty-five percent of the premium on any automobile liability insurance policy" for active duty, military reservist, and Louisiana Air and Army National Guard personnel based in Louisiana, on vehicles they own. The Department of Insurance's Regulation 81 applies the 25% only to the bodily injury and property damage liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist premium. On an illustrative $700 a year of those premiums, 25% is $175. Check the credit line on your declarations page.
Does State Farm give military members any discount outside Louisiana?
Not a military discount. Two state pages, read October 10, 2026, extend a course discount to service members. Kentucky's defensive driving discount, normally for principal drivers 55 or older, is "also extended to a principal driver of any age" who completed a defensive driving course "provided by the United States Armed Forces within the past five years." Montana's defensive driving discount is open to drivers 55 or older "or are a member of the Montana National Guard" who completed a Highway Traffic Safety Program in the last three years. Both pages require a completion certificate and print no percentage.
Is State Farm car insurance worth it for military members?
It depends on your state and your quote, and State Farm's pages show where it is thin. Outside Louisiana, State Farm prints no military discount, while GEICO's discounts page advertises up to 15% for active, retired, Guard, and Reserve members, and its brochure says military discounts apply in most states (both read October 10, 2026). State Farm's Drive Safe and Save program advertises savings "up to 30%" for driving data, though not in California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island. State Farm also says it does not currently offer rate quotes in Massachusetts or Rhode Island. Price the same coverages with at least two insurers before your next PCS.
Can I suspend State Farm insurance while deployed?
You can cut it back. State Farm's long-term car storage article, read October 10, 2026, says that if a vehicle is in storage for 30 days or more, "you may be able to suspend liability and collision coverages and only keep comprehensive coverage." It warns that a lender may require collision and comprehensive for the life of the loan, and that you must add liability and collision back before the car leaves storage. It also says a cancelled policy may create a gap that "could possibly put you in a higher category." Make the change through your State Farm agent and keep the confirmation.
