Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA

Search the American Family car discount tables for the word military and you come up empty: 20 discounts, four tables, no line for anyone in uniform. So the useful questions are about your orders. What does a car that barely moves cost to insure here? What happens to the policy at a state line? Where does the coverage stop? Every American Family fact below was read on amfam.com, or on its Costco member site, on October 16, 2026. For why a parked car mostly pays for risks it can no longer run into, and which states let it sit without liability, use the site’s deployment car insurance page. What follows is only what American Family prints.

Twenty discounts, none for service

The four tables run from Multi-vehicle, Loyalty, Early Bird, Multi-product and Steer Into Savings, through the safe-driving and usage group, to student and billing discounts. Three matter to a member with orders. Loyalty grows with tenure: “The amount you save will depend on how long you’ve been a customer with us.” Early Bird pays if you hold a policy with another carrier and get an American Family quote at least seven days before the new policy takes effect, with the amount set by state, which is worth knowing on a PCS into an American Family state. And the Full Coverage discount rewards “adding comprehensive & collision coverage,” so cutting a parked car to comprehensive likely costs you that discount too. American Family does not print its size.

One discount comes close to a military rule and stops short. Away at School pays when a student under 25 is more than 100 miles away at college and the car stays parked at home. It names students, not service members. If you are 19, stationed 1,000 miles from the family car, and still listed on a parent’s American Family policy, ask the agent whether anything similar applies, and get the answer in writing. Set that against GEICO, whose discounts page still offered active duty, retirees, Guard and Reserve as much as “up to 15 percent” off the total premium when read October 16, 2026; the GEICO page works through it.

A parked car: MilesMyWay or a smaller policy

MilesMyWay is the published tool built for a car that sits. The rules on its page:

  • Who fits. Drivers under about 20 miles a day, which American Family puts at 8,000 miles a year. Above that, “you won’t earn savings.”
  • How miles are counted. An odometer photo at the start of the term and another just before renewal, sent from a phone. No device, no app.
  • When the money arrives. Mileage is measured at the end of each term and the savings are “applied at renewal to the following term.” An introductory discount applies only to the first term.
  • What it touches. Liability, collision, comprehensive, medical, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and personal injury protection premiums, not fixed fees.

A deployment produces exactly the low mileage the program pays for, but the photos still have to be taken. The upload link goes by email and text to the primary insured, and a photo not sent by the requested date earns no savings. Leave a spouse or someone holding a power of attorney able to receive that link and send the photo; the spouses and families page covers that paperwork. Skip DriveMyWay for a parked car: it scores your driving through an app over a 99-trip tryout, and a car in storage logs no trips.

The other route is a smaller policy. Take an illustrative $130-a-month American Family policy: $68 for liability, uninsured motorist and medical, $40 for collision, $22 for comprehensive. Check the declarations page for your real split.

Nine months parkedPer monthTotal
Unchanged policy$130$1,170
Financed: liability off if the state permits; comprehensive and collision stay$62$558
Paid off: comprehensive only$22$198

The paid-off car saves about $972 and the financed car $612; expect the comprehensive-only price to land a little above $22 once the Full Coverage discount falls away. MilesMyWay runs on a different clock. Keep full coverage, drive almost nothing, and its 25% ceiling is worth at most $390 a year on that $1,560 premium, less once fixed fees come out. Your loan or lease contract, not American Family, decides whether collision can go, and interest on a car loan taken out before active duty can be capped at 6% under the SCRA, a separate saving.

PCS: the 19-state list, and a second channel

The amfam.com state list names Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. None of its 19 state car pages mentions military service. Its out-of-state article, updated July 14, 2023, sets the rule for a move: “The vehicle must be registered where you live, so the insurance policy must be from that state,” and you typically have 30 to 90 days after the move to switch. It also says not to cancel the old policy until the new one is in force.

Orders to Texas, California, Virginia or North Carolina take you off that list, but not always off the brand. American Family’s underwriting page says its products are offered “through different channels,” and its Costco member program, written by two American Family Connect companies or Midvale Indemnity, carries state fine print for California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, Texas, North Carolina and Virginia, none of them on the 19-state list. That program’s car discount page lists no military discount either. Its Lifetime Renewability benefit does not reach a policyholder who moves “to a state where CONNECT products are not available,” so ask before you count on it. The rest of the moving bills are on PCS money moves.

Overseas, leases and storage lots

Overseas, the American Family policy runs out. The same article says policies “may cover events that occur within the United States, plus territories and possessions, and Canada.” Drive in Germany, Italy, Japan or Korea and the car needs host-country coverage first.

Leases are where federal law does reach the car. Under § 3955, PCS orders taking you outside the 48 contiguous states and D.C., or deploying you for at least 180 days, let you end a vehicle lease you signed beforehand; the car goes back to the lessor within 15 days after your written notice, and the car lease termination guide walks through it. Once the lease ends, any refund of the American Family premium on that car follows the insurer’s terms, not the statute. A car parked in a commercial storage lot gets § 3958: no sale for unpaid rent without a court order during your service or for 90 days afterward; the storage lien page explains what to tell the operator.

To cancel, the FAQ sends you to your agent first; customer care at 1-833-381-1155 can submit a cancellation request to the agent for you. It prints no cancellation fee and no refund method, while a general American Family switching guide, updated in 2020, warns that ending a policy before renewal “may” carry fees. Ask both before you choose a date. The full pre-departure list is the deployment financial readiness checklist.

Work an American Family policy around orders

  1. Ask the agent in writing whether any military or occupation credit applies; expect the answer to be no, and price the policy on the published discounts.
  2. Thirty days out, get two quotes: full coverage on MilesMyWay, and comprehensive only. Car loan? The lender sets the floor.
  3. On MilesMyWay, name who will send the odometer photo before renewal while you are gone.
  4. PCS to a state off the 19-state list: buy the new state’s policy first and end the old one the day it starts.
  5. Orders overseas: arrange host-country insurance before the car is shipped. If it is leased, check the lease termination calculator before anything else.
  6. Before the car comes out of storage, have the agent put liability and collision back on.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3955

Termination of residential or motor vehicle leases: read the statute , or read § 3955 in plain English, with its enforcement record .

Frequently asked questions

Does American Family Insurance offer a military discount?

Not on its discount list. The amfam.com car discounts page, read October 16, 2026, sets out 20 discounts in four tables, from Multi-vehicle and Loyalty to AutoPay and Paperless, and none is for active duty, Guard, Reserve, or veterans. The word military does not appear on the page. Its general discounts page and the car discount page of its Costco member program do not list one either. Ask the agent anyway, but price the policy on what American Family does print: MilesMyWay for low mileage, Loyalty for tenure, and Early Bird for getting a quote at least seven days before a new policy starts while you still hold one elsewhere.

Does American Family have a deployment or car storage discount?

No storage program appears on the amfam.com pages read October 16, 2026. Two published tools do the work instead. MilesMyWay rewards a car driven under 8,000 miles a year with up to 25% off eligible coverages, measured by odometer photos and applied at the next renewal. And the American Family cancel page suggests lowering limits or removing optional coverages before you cancel. On a paid-off car that sits, ask the agent to keep comprehensive and drop the rest where your state allows. Financed or leased? The loan or lease contract will usually insist on comprehensive and collision.

Does American Family car insurance cover me overseas?

Only in a short list of places. The American Family article on out-of-state car insurance, updated July 14, 2023 and read October 16, 2026, says its policies "may cover events that occur within the United States, plus territories and possessions, and Canada," and tells you to ask an agent how your own policy applies. Ship the car to Germany, Italy, Japan, or Korea and you will need coverage written for that country before anyone drives it there. If the car stays stateside in storage, keep the U.S. policy on it at whatever level the loan and your state require.

Can I keep American Family insurance if I PCS to another state?

Only where American Family sells through the channel you use. The amfam.com car insurance state list, read October 16, 2026, names 19 states: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. Its out-of-state article says the policy must come from the state where the car is registered and that you typically have 30 to 90 days after a move to switch. A Costco member program written by American Family Connect and Midvale companies reaches other states, on its own terms.

How do I cancel American Family car insurance before I deploy or PCS?

Call your agent. The American Family cancel FAQ, read October 16, 2026, calls that the easiest route and says customer care at 1-833-381-1155 can direct you to your agent or submit a cancellation request form to the agent for you. The FAQ does not state a cancellation fee or how a refund is figured, and the American Family guide to switching companies warns that ending a policy before renewal can carry fees, so ask both questions before you choose a date. Check your state rules before cancelling coverage on a car that stays registered.
