Erie Insurance Military Discount: None Listed; 90-Day Storage Discount
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
Erie’s discount list has nothing for a uniform, but two lines in its fine print decide what a deployment or a PCS costs you. One pays you for a car that sits for 90 days. The other tells you that Erie stops at the edge of 12 states and the District of Columbia. Every Erie fact below was read on erieinsurance.com on October 16, 2026, including a check of the rendered footnotes, because Erie’s site attaches its state limits through numbered notes. The deployment car insurance page sorts out which coverages can come off a parked car, depending on whether it is financed, leased or paid off and on your state’s registration rules.

The 90-day reduced usage discount
Erie’s discount page frames it for snowbirds: keep the car out of winter weather, or fly somewhere warm for a while. Then it widens it. “Whatever the reason, if you plan to store your vehicle for 90 consecutive days or more, ERIE offers a reduced usage discount in most states.” A deployment of three months or longer fits that wording. The main auto page puts the clock inside the policy: you must not be using the car “for at least 90 consecutive days during the policy period.”
Four limits shape what you ask for:
- Kentucky is out. The discounts page says “Not available in Kentucky,” and on the main auto page the footnote marked to this discount reads “Not available in the Kentucky Exchange Program.” Twelve of the 13 Erie state pages list a reduced usage discount; Kentucky’s page does not.
- No number. Erie prints no percentage, so the discount is worth whatever your agent quotes.
- No stacking rule. Erie does not say whether the discount still applies once you cut a parked car to comprehensive. Get the stored premium quoted both ways.
- One family conflict. The college student discount, for a child away at school without a car, “cannot be used in conjunction with the Reduced Usage Discount.” Its footnote is attached to the college student line, not to the storage line, so it matters only if both apply to your household.
If your policy carries ERIE Rate Lock, cutting coverage does not cost you the lock. The Rate Lock page says that if you add or delete coverages, “your premium will only be adjusted to reflect that particular change.” Its fine print does list a change in “the location your vehicle is principally garaged at” among the changes that can reprice the policy, so ask whether moving the car to a storage lot counts. Rate Lock is limited to three years in Virginia.
Nine months parked, priced three ways
Take an illustrative $110-a-month Erie policy: $55 for liability, uninsured motorist and medical, $35 for collision, $20 for comprehensive. Your own numbers sit on the declarations page.
| Coverage during a 9-month deployment | Monthly cost | Deployment total |
|---|---|---|
| No change | $110 | $990 |
| Financed: comprehensive and collision kept; liability off only where state law allows | $55 | $495 |
| Paid off: comprehensive only | $20 | $180 |
The paid-off car saves $810 and the financed car $495, before any reduced usage discount, which Erie does not size. A lender or lease contract usually requires comprehensive and collision for as long as the loan or lease runs; that is a contract term, so ask the lender by email which coverages must stay and keep its reply. Dropping liability is legal only in states that allow a registered car to go uninsured while parked. Erie’s cancelling article points the same way: as long as you own the car, “it’s best to keep some level of auto insurance,” because a lapse “can make insurance more expensive” later. If the loan began before you entered active duty, the SCRA’s 6% interest cap is worth asking for separately. Erie’s storage percentage is unknown; USAA, by contrast, prints “up to 60% off your premium” for a stored car, though not in North Carolina or Virginia (read October 16, 2026), as the USAA page explains.
Twelve states and D.C.: what a PCS does to the policy
Erie lists Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia and Wisconsin. Its state page answers the PCS question directly. Moving to another Erie state, “your ERIE policy would need rewritten for the new state.” Moving anywhere else, “you’ll need a new provider.” Its cancelling article adds that an out-of-state move “will require you to cancel your existing car insurance and purchase an auto policy in your new home state,” even inside the Erie map.
So orders from Norfolk to San Diego, or from Columbus, Ohio, to El Paso, end the Erie policy. Buy the new state’s policy first, then cancel Erie effective the same day. Erie’s multi-state article also says a car “garaged” in one state “should have an insurance policy in that state,” which matters if you leave a car at a parent’s house in Pennsylvania while you serve elsewhere. Moving costs beyond the car are on PCS money moves.
Leaving: no fee, a possible refund, and the territory
Erie’s cancelling article, dated July 6, 2023, says an Erie customer “will not be charged a cancellation fee.” Erie’s blog describes its products as of each post’s publish date, so confirm that with the agent. You cancel through your agent and give the end date; the article warns that some insurers ask for a signed or written request. Refunds of unused premium come through the agent; Erie says they most often go to drivers who paid the year in one lump sum, which also earns Erie’s pay-in-full discount, and that monthly payers may still see a small one. Customer Care is (800) 458-0811, option 5, weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
Overseas, Erie publishes no country list. Its multi-state article defines policy territory as “often consisting of the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada” and sends you to your agent. Driving in Germany, Italy, Japan or Korea calls for insurance bought in that country. The SCRA’s car provisions sit outside the policy. Section 3955 lets you terminate a vehicle lease signed before you received PCS orders out of the 48 contiguous states and D.C., or deployment orders of 180 days or longer, and you hand the car back no later than 15 days after giving written notice; the car lease termination guide lists what to send. Section 3958 means a storage operator holding a lien for unpaid fees needs a court order to sell your car while you are in service and for 90 days after your service ends, which the storage lien page explains.
Work an Erie policy around orders
- Ninety days or more away from the car? Ask your agent for the reduced usage discount by name, unless the policy is in Kentucky.
- Get the stored premium quoted two ways: full coverage with the discount, and comprehensive only. If there is a loan, get the lender’s coverage requirement in writing first.
- On Rate Lock, ask whether the storage address counts as a garaging change before you move the car.
- PCS outside Erie’s 12 states and D.C.: buy the new policy first, then cancel Erie the same day; Erie’s 2023 article says there is no cancellation fee.
- Leased car and qualifying orders: open the lease termination calculator before you pick storage.
- Restore liability and collision through the agent before anyone drives the stored car again.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3955
Termination of residential or motor vehicle leases: read the statute , or read § 3955 in plain English, with its enforcement record .
Frequently asked questions
Does Erie Insurance offer a military discount?
No published one. The Erie auto discounts page, read October 16, 2026, covers multi-policy savings, First Accident Forgiveness, the Diminishing Deductible option, vehicle storage, safety features, paying in full, youthful driver and college student discounts, teenSMART, and YourTurn, and not one is aimed at service members. None of the 13 Erie state auto pages read the same day mentions military service. The only page with military in its address in the Erie sitemap is a careers page recruiting veterans. Ask your agent, but plan your savings around the storage discount and the coverage you keep on a parked car.
Does Erie have a deployment or car storage discount?
It has a storage discount, and its wording covers a 90-day stretch for any reason. The Erie discounts page, read October 16, 2026, says that if you plan to store your vehicle for 90 consecutive days or more, "ERIE offers a reduced usage discount in most states," and adds that it is not available in Kentucky. The main Erie auto page words it as not using the car for at least 90 consecutive days during the policy period. Erie prints no percentage and does not say whether the discount combines with dropping coverage, so ask your agent for the stored premium both ways.
Can I keep Erie insurance after a PCS to another state?
Only if the new state is on the Erie list. The Erie state coverage page, read October 16, 2026, names Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Moving to another Erie state, "your ERIE policy would need rewritten for the new state." Moving anywhere else, "you'll need a new provider." Have the new policy in force before moving day so the car is never uninsured.
Does Erie charge a fee to cancel car insurance?
Erie says it does not, in an article dated July 6, 2023. That article on cancelling car insurance, still posted on October 16, 2026, states that an Erie customer "will not be charged a cancellation fee" for cancelling an auto policy, and Erie's blog notes that what it describes is in effect as of the publish date, so confirm with your agent. You cancel through your local agent and give the date you want coverage to end; the article says that, depending on the insurer, you may be asked to sign a document or put the request in writing. Any refund of unused premium comes through the agent, and Erie says refunds most often go to customers who paid the year up front. Erie Customer Care is (800) 458-0811, option 5.
Does Erie car insurance cover me overseas?
Erie does not publish a country list. Its article on out-of-state coverage, dated May 5, 2026 and read October 16, 2026, defines policy territory as the area where coverage applies, "often consisting of the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada," and says to contact your Erie agent. Check the territory clause in your own policy before a PCS, and buy host-country coverage before a car is driven in Germany, Italy, Japan, or Korea. Erie sells auto insurance only in its 12 states and D.C.
