Public Storage does not publish a military discount. Its Military Storage page talks about deployments and duty-station moves, but neither it, the Storage Deals page, nor the help center names a military rate (all read October 9, 2026). What Public Storage does publish is a general web promotion, a $1 first month on select units, plus the billing rules that decide whether a deployed renter’s account stays current.

That second part is where the money is. If the rent lapses while you are gone, the federal backstop is 50 U.S.C. § 3958: a storage company holding a lien on a servicemember’s goods may not enforce it during service, or within 90 days after, without a court order granted first. The storage lien explainer covers the section itself, and the eligibility guide covers who counts, including reservists from the day orders arrive. Below is how Public Storage’s own terms interact with the rule.

What Public Storage’s pages say

TopicWhat Public Storage publishes (read October 9, 2026)
Military discountNone named on the military, deals, or help pages; “promotions vary by location”
Current web offers$1 first month on select units; new customers; one offer per household; rental fee only; $29 administrative fee. Select-unit versions add 40% off the next 3 months or waive the admin fee
BillingMonth to month; all accounts bill on the 1st; a mid-month move-in is credited in month two
Rate changesAt least 30 days’ notice by email or mail
Unpaid rent”Multiple attempts” to contact you at the address and email on file; contents may then be auctioned online or in person
After an auctionProceeds go to unpaid rent, eligible fees, and lien-sale costs; “a remaining balance may apply”
Others on the accountAuthorized people can be added online under Storage Unit(s), Authorized People
Moving outNotice at least 7 days ahead; moving out on or after the due date costs the full month
Phone800-742-8048, or chat

Two rows deserve a second look. Public Storage’s blog post on auctions, dated September 3, 2026, says a remaining balance may apply if the sale does not cover what is owed. A renter can lose the goods and still owe money, which is why the court step in § 3958 matters. And Public Storage does not publish a late fee or a lien fee on any page read for this article. Those numbers live only in your signed rental agreement, so photograph that page before you deploy.

If your store used to be iStorage, Move It, Northwest, or another NSA brand

Public Storage closed its purchase of National Storage Affiliates on July 22, 2026. Its press release counts more than 1,000 NSA properties and nearly 500,000 NSA customers moving to the Public Storage brand. The help center’s transition FAQ, tagged iStorage, Move It Storage, Northwest Self Storage, RightSpace Storage, Secure Care Storage, and Southern Self Storage, lists what changes for those renters:

  • You must create a new Public Storage online account and sign a new rental agreement through a red banner link.
  • AutoPay information “may take some time to transfer,” so sign in and add or update it yourself.
  • Billing moves to the 1st, so the next bill may be prorated.
  • Your account number changes.
  • Rent stays the same during the transition, with 30 days’ notice of later changes.

For a deployed renter, the AutoPay line is the dangerous one. In a 2024 Justice Department case, the government alleged that autopay stopped after a Tampa storage facility was sold and changed managers, rent notices went to an unread inbox, and a deployed Staff Sergeant’s goods were sold at auction for $390. That case is in the site’s enforcement ledger. If your unit changed hands this year, check AutoPay before you leave, not after.

The dollar math on a Public Storage unit

Public Storage publishes no unit price that applies everywhere, so use your own. Say your unit rents for $160.

The web promotion. A $1 first month saves $159 in month one. The $29 administrative fee still applies unless your unit carries one of the versions the deals page lists with no administrative fee. A 5% military rate on the same unit, $8 a month, would take about 20 months to save as much, so on a short stay the published promotion beats any small discount a manager might quote.

The PCS timing. Because billing runs on the 1st and moving out on or after the due date costs the full month, clearing the unit on the 2nd instead of the 31st costs $160. Give the 7 days’ notice early and finish before the 1st.

A lapsed deployment. Eight unpaid months at $160 is $1,280 in rent, plus whatever late and lien fees your agreement sets. Section 3958 does not erase that balance. It means any sale needs a judge first, and § 3958(b) lets that judge stay the case or adjust the obligation. That is your chance to contest fees before the goods are touched.

Who can act for you while you are gone

Public Storage lets you add authorized people online, and they can enter the space if you share your access information and key. That covers access, not decisions. For paying, signing, or answering a lien notice, give a spouse or parent a specific power of attorney; the spouse and family guide explains what one covers. If a sale happens anyway without a court order, the enforcement options page covers a private suit under § 4042.

Set up a Public Storage unit for a deployment

  1. Log in or use the app and confirm AutoPay is on, from an account that will not expire while you are away. If your store was an NSA brand, sign the new rental agreement and re-enter AutoPay first.
  2. Update the email, phone, and mailing address on the account to ones a trusted person checks. Public Storage sends unpaid-rent contacts to the address and email on file.
  3. Add that person under Storage Unit(s), Authorized People, and hand over the key and gate information.
  4. Give the local office a written notice of military service with your orders and a status report from the DMDC certificate site. Ask the office to note the account, then confirm by chat or at 800-742-8048. Keep copies.
  5. If an auction notice reaches you or your contact, answer in writing that 50 U.S.C. § 3958 bars any sale without a court order, and call installation legal assistance the same day.
  6. When orders move you out, give 7 days’ notice and empty the unit before the 1st. The PCS money moves guide covers the rest of the move budget.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3958

Frequently asked questions

Does Public Storage have a military discount?

Not one it publishes. Public Storage's Military Storage page and its Storage Deals page, both read October 9, 2026, describe military storage needs and general promotions but name no military discount. The deals page says promotions vary by location. The current web offer is a $1 first month on select units for new customers, limited to one offer per household, applying only to the rental fee, with a $29 administrative fee. If a manager quotes a military rate, have it written into the rental agreement before you sign.

Is the Public Storage military discount people mention online real?

Some discount roundup sites say individual Public Storage locations may give military rates. Public Storage's own military, deals, and help pages say nothing of the kind as of October 9, 2026. A local manager may still offer something, but nothing on the company's site obligates a store to. Treat any verbal offer as unconfirmed until it appears in your signed agreement. The general web promotion, a $1 first month on select units, is published and is worth a full month of rent minus $1.

Can Public Storage auction my unit while I am deployed?

Not without a court order. 50 U.S.C. § 3958 bars anyone holding a lien on a servicemember's property from enforcing it during military service and for 90 days after unless a court order is granted first. Public Storage's help center says that when rent goes unpaid it makes multiple contact attempts through the address and email on file before contents may be sold online or in person. Send written notice of your service and orders so the office knows the federal rule applies to your account.

My storage company became Public Storage. What do I need to do?

Public Storage closed its purchase of National Storage Affiliates on July 22, 2026. Its transition FAQ says former NSA customers must create a new online account and sign a new rental agreement, that AutoPay information may take time to transfer, that billing moves to the 1st so the next bill may be prorated, and that the account number changes. If you are deploying, log in, sign the agreement, and re-enter AutoPay yourself rather than assuming it carried over. The FAQ is tagged iStorage, Move It Storage, Northwest Self Storage, RightSpace Storage, Secure Care Storage, and Southern Self Storage.

How much notice does Public Storage need when I PCS?

Seven days. Public Storage's help article on vacating says to tell it at least 7 days before your move-out date by chat, phone at 800-742-8048, or your online account. Then empty and clean the space and remove your lock. Billing is month to month on the 1st, and if you move out on or after your rent due date you are charged the full month. Finish before the 1st to avoid paying for a month you did not use.
