Equinox Military: No Posted Discount; Sessions End With Membership
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
Equinox has no military discount on its site, and it keeps its prices behind a lead form. What it does publish are the rules that cost a departing member money: notice periods that “vary by state,” a freeze policy written around medical and statutory reasons, and prepaid training sessions that expire the day your membership ends. When qualifying orders move you, federal law overrides the parts that matter. Under 50 U.S.C. § 3956(e)(1), a gym may not impose an early termination charge, and § 3956(f) returns dues paid for any billing period after the one you end in.
No military rate, and no public price
On October 9, 2026, equinox.com/military and equinox.com/heroes returned 404 pages. The FAQ, the Member Policies, the website terms, and the Member Benefits page had no military offer. The Member Benefits page lists what every new member gets instead, including a complimentary personal training session, a Pilates session, and two annual guest passes.
Prices are harder to find. Equinox’s join page asks for your name, email, phone, and club before it shows a membership, and it says that by continuing you agree to share your contact details with a membership advisor. This page did not submit that form, so it quotes no Equinox dues. One set of dues-related numbers is public: the fees of Flex, Equinox’s HSA and FSA partner, a $10 application fee for a letter of medical necessity, and 4% of each monthly payment plus $0.30 a month.

Two lines deserve a second look. The freeze rule mentions “another statutorily required reason,” which suggests reasons set by state law and repeated in your agreement; Equinox publishes no military freeze of its own, and it sends other freeze requests to Concierge. And checking in at any club while frozen lets Equinox return you to active status and add prorated dues, so a short trip home on leave can end a freeze you meant to keep.
Equinox’s terms against § 3956
Section 3956 covers a gym membership or fitness program you signed before receiving orders to relocate for 90 days or more to a location that does not support the contract. A 2023 amendment added contracts signed after PCS orders that a stop-movement order then blocks. The service contract explainer covers every provider, and § 3956’s text is on this site.
| Topic | Equinox | § 3956 |
|---|---|---|
| Notice period | Varies by state, per your agreement | Written notice with orders and the end date, (a)(3); the statute sets no notice period |
| Leaving early | Set by your agreement; not published | No early termination charge, (e)(1) |
| Dues after you leave | No refund rule published | Refund within 60 days, except the current billing period, (f) |
| Training or Pilates subscription | 6 or 12-week initial commitment, then weekly renewal | Fitness programs are covered, (b)(1)(E); no early termination charge |
| Unused sessions | Expire at termination; refunds only as required by law | Amounts paid for time after the end date come back, except the current billing period, (f); whether a session pack counts is untested |
Equinox column read October 9, 2026; statute read the same day in the 2024 edition on GovInfo.
The training row is the easiest one to miss. Its in-club subscription programs start with “an initial 6- or 12-week commitment period” and then renew every week until you cancel. A program sold by the gym for use in the gym is a natural fit for “fitness program,” so name it in your notice and refuse any charge for the unused commitment.
A PCS with sessions on the books, worked through
Equinox publishes no session price, so use your own receipt. Here is the timeline for a Navy officer at a Washington, DC club who bought a pack of personal training sessions on February 1 and receives PCS orders on March 3 with a May 15 report date.
| Date | What happens under Equinox’s rules | Your move under § 3956 |
|---|---|---|
| March 3 | Orders arrive; sessions are good until August 1 or membership end | Pull your agreement from Concierge and read the notice clause |
| March 10 | Book the remaining sessions; changes need 24 hours’ notice | Late cancels are charged in full, so schedule carefully |
| April 30 | Last session used; any leftovers expire when the membership ends | Set April 30 as the end date in your written notice |
| June 29 | Dues drafted for May or later should be back | Refund deadline, 60 days after the end date, (f) |
Dates are an illustration and assume dues bill by calendar month. Equinox’s rule that sessions expire at “the termination of your membership or six (6) months after the date of purchase of the sessions, whichever comes earlier” sets the August 1 outer limit.
The math is simple once you plug in your numbers: unused sessions times your per-session price is what expires on the end date you pick. Every month you push the end date back to use them costs a month of dues. If you cannot finish them, ask in writing for the unused amount and quote Equinox’s own carve-out, “except as required by law.” Its policies also allow a refund of unused sessions in “certain limited circumstances expressly set forth in your Membership Agreement,” so check that clause when Concierge sends your copy.
Where Equinox has no club
Equinox says it has more than 115 clubs worldwide. Its club directory on October 9, 2026 grouped them into New York, Northern and Southern California, Boston, Chicago, Connecticut, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington state, the Washington, DC area, Canada, and London. It had no region for North Carolina, Georgia, Colorado, Hawaii, or Alaska. Orders of 90 days or more to those states are the plain case for § 3956. Orders to another Equinox city are less clear, because the Member Policies refer to the clubs “in your membership class,” so which clubs you can use depends on your membership, and the statute does not define a location that supports the contract.
Cancel Equinox on orders
End an Equinox membership under § 3956
- Email Concierge@equinox.com for a copy of your Membership Agreement and any training or Pilates subscription agreement.
- Use or schedule prepaid sessions before your end date, at least 24 hours ahead of any change.
- Write the notice: your name, home club, the end date, and “I am terminating this membership and any subscription program under 50 U.S.C. § 3956.” The letter generator drafts it.
- Attach orders showing a relocation or deployment of 90 days or more, say why no club in your membership class serves the new location, and email everything to Cancellations@Equinox.com. Send the training or Pilates subscription notice to Concierge@Equinox.com too, the address Equinox lists for cancelling those. Keep the sent messages.
- If you pay dues through Flex with HSA or FSA funds, confirm that billing stops too.
- Check your statements. Dues for a billing period after the one you end in are due back within 60 days under § 3956(f).
If Equinox bills an early termination charge anyway, installation legal assistance can help, and the enforcement guide covers the next steps. The eligibility guide confirms whose service counts, and spouses with their own memberships should read the family guide. LA Fitness takes the opposite approach to pausing, a flat $10 monthly freeze; its page has the comparison. The rest of the move is in PCS money moves.

Frequently asked questions
Does Equinox have a military discount?
Not one it publishes. On October 9, 2026, equinox.com/military returned a 404, and Equinox's FAQ, Member Policies, terms, and Member Benefits page had no military offer. Equinox also posts no membership prices; its join page asks for your name, email, and phone before it shows a rate. If you ask a membership advisor about a military rate, get the answer on the agreement. The federal right to cancel on orders does not depend on any discount.
Can I cancel Equinox with military orders?
Yes, when the orders relocate you for 90 days or more to a place your membership cannot serve and you joined before receiving them. 50 U.S.C. § 3956(b)(1)(E) covers gym memberships and fitness programs, and § 3956(e)(1) bars early termination charges. Equinox says notice periods vary by state. Section 3956 sets no notice period of its own: under § 3956(a)(3) your notice names the end date, and under § 3956(f) dues paid for time after that date must be refunded within 60 days, except the current billing period.
How do I cancel an Equinox membership?
Equinox's FAQ lists five ways: in the club with a club manager, by mail as described in your Membership Agreement, by email to Cancellations@Equinox.com, by phone through Equinox Concierge, or by logging into your account on equinox.com. For an orders-based termination, email is the cleanest record. Attach the orders, state the end date, and cite 50 U.S.C. § 3956. For a copy of your agreement, Equinox says to email Concierge@equinox.com.
Can I freeze Equinox for a deployment?
Possibly. Equinox's Member Policies allow a freeze if you are medically unable to use any club or for "another statutorily required reason as described in your Membership Agreement," and tell members to contact the front desk or Concierge about non-medical freezes. Members with a past-due balance, a payroll-deducted or subsidized corporate membership, or a short-term membership cannot freeze. Locker and laundry fees keep billing during a freeze, and session expiration dates keep running.
What happens to my Equinox personal training sessions if I cancel?
They expire. Equinox's Member Policies say all sessions expire when your membership ends or six months after purchase, whichever comes first, and that sales are final and non-refundable except as required by law. Use them before your end date if you can. If you cannot, ask for a refund in writing and cite 50 U.S.C. § 3956(f), which refunds amounts paid for time after the end date, except the current billing period. Whether a session pack counts as paid for a period is untested.
