PenFed Military Pay Dates: Calendar Covers Active, Retired and VA Pay
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
PenFed does pay early, and it publishes the exact dates. Its Treasury Direct Deposit Calendar puts military pay in your account two to three days before DFAS releases it, and a separate table on the same page covers VA payments. The calendar page and PenFed’s direct deposit page were read on October 16, 2026. Automated tools are blocked there, so both were read in a browser.
PenFed’s military rows next to DFAS
PenFed labels each row with a description and two dates: the military posting date and the date funds are available. The DFAS column is the 2026 active duty table DFAS last updated August 25, 2026. The mid-October row is behind us (funds October 13 for DFAS’s October 15) and is left out below.
| PenFed row | DFAS date | PenFed posting date | Funds available at PenFed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active/Retired | Oct. 30 (Friday) | Oct. 30 | Oct. 28 (Wednesday) |
| Active Mid Month | Nov. 13 (Friday) | Nov. 13 | Nov. 11 (Wednesday, Veterans Day) |
| Active/Retired | Dec. 1 (Tuesday) | Dec. 1 | Nov. 28 (Saturday) |
| Active Mid Month | Dec. 15 (Tuesday) | Dec. 15 | Dec. 12 (Saturday) |
| Active/Retired | Dec. 31 (Thursday) | Dec. 31 | Dec. 29 (Tuesday) |
PenFed’s posting column matches DFAS on all 24 dates in 2026, not just these five. The page prints no year on the table itself; the year comes from its one “PDF Version” link, which is the 2026 file. The 2026 pay dates guide has DFAS’s full year and the reason November gets a single DFAS payday.
In the five remaining rows, the funds column runs two calendar days ahead when DFAS pays on a Thursday or Friday, and three days ahead, on a Saturday, when DFAS pays on a Tuesday. Wednesday, November 11 is Veterans Day, a federal holiday on OPM’s 2026 list, and PenFed still shows funds that day.
The tables most people scroll past
The calendar is not only for active duty. It carries separate tables for OPM, Railroad Retirement, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Security on four schedules, and SSI. Two matter to military families.
VA payments. The VA table’s last two rows for 2026:
| PenFed month label | VA posting date | Funds available at PenFed |
|---|---|---|
| November | Friday, October 30 | Wednesday, October 28 |
| December | Tuesday, December 1 | Saturday, November 28 |
The VA rows land on the same funds dates as the military end-of-month rows. A retiree who gets both retired pay and VA compensation at PenFed sees both of the December 1 payments on Saturday, November 28. The VA table stops at December 1. Its January row shows a December 31 posting from the prior year, so any year-end VA deposit would belong to a calendar PenFed has not posted.
Annuities. DFAS pays annuitants on its own dates: November 2, then December 1, then January 4, 2027 for the December entitlement. PenFed’s military table has no annuitant row. Its OPM table is for payments from the Office of Personnel Management, and military annuitants are paid by DFAS, so a survivor cannot read a PenFed date off it.
”Up to 2 days” and the conditions attached
PenFed’s direct deposit page headline reads “Get paid up to 2 days early!” Its FAQ uses softer words: paychecks “may” come up to two days early, and early availability “depends on when PenFed receives payment information from your employer or benefits provider.” The disclosure opens early access to every member who sets up direct deposit, then warns eligibility “may vary between pay periods and timing of paying agency’s funding.”
Neither PenFed page publishes a posting time, a holiday rule, or what happens when DFAS is late. The calendar does list Veterans Day as a funds date, so on PenFed’s own plan a federal holiday does not hold the money back.
Two things follow. First, the calendar is PenFed’s plan, built on DFAS sending the file on time. If DFAS is late, the funds date can slip. Second, the Saturday dates sit three calendar days ahead, a day past the two-day headline, so do not treat the headline as a ceiling.
Setup has its own lag. PenFed’s in-app setup works with Free Checking, Access America, Complete Access, Pencheck Plus and Premium Online Savings, runs through a third party called Pinwheel, and may let you send all or part of a paycheck. Its FAQ warns that “it may take a few pay cycles before the update takes effect.” The other route, which PenFed’s FAQ also describes, is to hand your routing and account numbers to your payroll provider; for military pay that means myPay or your finance office.
Worked example: two deposits on one Saturday
Illustration. The dollar amounts are assumed; the dates are PenFed’s and DFAS’s.
A retired E-7 gets $2,800 in retired pay and $1,700 in VA compensation, both deposited at PenFed. Under PenFed’s calendar, $4,500 is available Saturday, November 28, three days before either agency’s December 1 date. Her mortgage, $1,950, drafts on the 1st. The early money covers it with room to spare. But if either agency’s payment information reaches PenFed late, that deposit may not show until December 1, the same day the mortgage pulls.
Now the stretch between deposits for an active duty member spending an assumed $65 a day. At PenFed, Nov. 11 to Nov. 28 is 17 days, or $1,105. On DFAS’s dates, Nov. 13 to Dec. 1 is 18 days, or $1,170. December repeats it: Dec. 12 to Dec. 29 at PenFed is 17 days against DFAS’s 16. Early pay rearranges the gaps; the paychecks are the same size either way.
Make PenFed's calendar work for you
- Route pay in myPay with PenFed’s routing number, 256078446 (from its direct deposit page), and your account number.
- Keep the old account open until a deposit actually lands at PenFed; PenFed warns a change can take a few pay cycles.
- Set the mortgage, rent and car payment for the DFAS date, not the funds-available date.
- If you also get VA pay, read the VA table, not the military rows. Retirees can check what their state taxes in military retirement pay by state.
- In late December, reload the calendar page and confirm the PDF link reads 2027 before you plan January.

Frequently asked questions
Does PenFed pay early?
Yes. On its direct deposit page PenFed advertises paychecks up to two days early to any member who sets up direct deposit with an employer or paying agency (read October 16, 2026). The fine print hedges: whether a given deposit comes early can change from one pay period to the next, and it turns on when the paying agency funds the payment. For military pay, PenFed also publishes the exact funds-available date for every payday on its Treasury Direct Deposit Calendar.
What is the PenFed Army pay calendar for 2026?
PenFed has no separate Army calendar. Its military table, headed Active Mid-Month, End of Month and Retired Military, has no branch column. For the rest of 2026 it lists funds available Oct. 28 (Wed), Nov. 11 (Wed), Nov. 28 (Sat), Dec. 12 (Sat) and Dec. 29 (Tue), each two or three days before the DFAS date in its posting column (read October 16, 2026). The page prints no year, but its PDF link is the 2026 file and every posting date matches DFAS's 2026 table.
When does VA disability pay post at PenFed?
PenFed's calendar has a table for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Its last two 2026 rows show a VA posting date of Friday, October 30 with funds available Wednesday, October 28, and a VA posting date of Tuesday, December 1 with funds available Saturday, November 28 (read October 16, 2026). PenFed files the October 30 payment under November. The table holds no row for a VA deposit later in December, so any year-end VA payment would appear on a calendar PenFed has not yet posted.
Has PenFed released a 2027 direct deposit calendar?
Not as of October 16, 2026. The calendar page linked only one calendar PDF, the 2026 file, which PenFed's server dated December 31, 2025. The same address with 2027 in place of 2026 returned an error page. Going by that server date, the next file may not appear until late December. DFAS had not published its own 2027 active duty table on that date either, so no early 2027 date from any institution can be checked against an official DFAS date yet.
Do military retirees get early pay at PenFed?
Yes, by PenFed's own calendar. The end-of-month rows in its military table are labeled Active/Retired, so retired pay follows the same dates: funds available October 28 for the October 30 payment, November 28 for December 1, and December 29 for December 31 (read October 16, 2026). Those posting dates match DFAS's retiree schedule. Annuitants are different: DFAS pays them November 2 and January 4, 2027, and PenFed's military table has no annuitant row.
