GEICO Military Discount: Up to 15%, Most States; Policy Ends Overseas
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
GEICO offers active duty, retired, Guard, and Reserve members a discount of up to 15% on the total premium, in most states but not all. It also runs an Emergency Deployment Discount and a Storage Protection Plan, and both depend on the car sitting parked. Every GEICO fact below was read on GEICO’s own pages on October 10, 2026. The general case for repricing a parked car, with the ownership rules for financed and leased cars, is on the deployment car insurance page.
What GEICO’s military pages actually say
| Program | What GEICO’s page says | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| Military Discount | ”Up to 15 percent on your total insurance premium” for active duty, retired, Guard, or Reserve | Which states; the brochure says “most states” |
| Emergency Deployment Discount | For orders to imminent danger pay areas “designated by the Department of Defense (DOD) and approved by Congress”; car must be “stored under one of our approved storage protection plans” | Any percentage; which operations are excluded |
| Storage Protection Plan | Stored “30 days or more,” GEICO “can suspend or reduce your insurance coverage” | Which coverages; any savings figure |
| Membership Discount | Military associations, “applicable in most states”; “one group discount applicable per policy” | A consistent list of groups |
| Overseas | ”Our auto insurance policies do not extend coverage to you in foreign countries” | Canada: a separate GEICO page says U.S. coverage “does extend north of the border” |
Table checked October 10, 2026 on geico.com.
Two cautions come out of that table. First, the 15% is a maximum. A disclaimer on the same page says “Discount amount varies in some states,” and its military brochure promises “military discounts in most states.” Second, the military landing page lists “Worldwide coverage” among its features, and the military FAQ says “You can continue your GEICO insurance when you get ordered overseas.” Read both next to the overseas page, which says plainly that GEICO’s auto policies do not cover you in foreign countries. The overseas page is the specific statement, the FAQ sends you to it, and what it offers abroad is a partner carrier’s policy, not your U.S. one.
Who qualifies: GEICO’s pages do not agree
GEICO describes the eligible group three ways. The discounts page names active duty, “retired from the Military,” and Guard or Reserve. The military FAQ says “current and former military members, including the National Guard.” The landing page says veterans, active duty, Guard, and Reserve are eligible for military car insurance and offers them “various car insurance discounts.” A veteran who served four years and separated fits the FAQ and the landing page, but not the discounts page.
The membership discount has the same problem. GEICO’s pages name five different organizations across four pages:
- The discounts page shows the Armed Forces Benefit Association, the Navy League of the United States, and the Association of the United States Army.
- The military landing page names only the Navy League.
- The organization search page lists the Navy League and the U.S. Naval Institute.
- The about page names the Association of the United States Army, the Fleet Reserve Association, and the Armed Forces Benefit Association.
Only one group discount applies per policy, so pick one membership and ask the Military Center whether it is honored in your state. If someone at home will handle the policy while you are gone, GEICO’s pre-deployment checklist tells you to give that person “3rd party authorization” before you leave. Powers of attorney and the rest of that paperwork are on the spouses and families page.
The Emergency Deployment Discount needs a parked car
This discount is not a reward for deploying. It has two gates, and you need both: orders to a DOD-designated imminent danger pay area, and a car enrolled in a GEICO storage protection plan. GEICO’s landing page describes it differently, as a discount “for military members deployed in support of a declared U.S. military emergency deployment.” Its discounts page adds that “some military operations are excluded” and that it is “not available in all states.” No percentage appears on GEICO’s seven military pages, its organization search page, or its military brochure, all read October 10, 2026.
The order matters. Enroll the car in storage protection first, then ask for the deployment discount on the same call, citing your orders. If your spouse keeps driving the car, it is not stored, so neither the storage plan nor the deployment discount fits. If the storage lot or a repair shop claims a lien for an unpaid bill while you are deployed, § 3958 of the SCRA bars enforcing it during service and for 90 days after without a court order. The storage lien page covers the notice to send the operator.
PCS overseas: the GEICO policy stays home
GEICO’s overseas page is direct: “Our auto insurance policies do not extend coverage to you in foreign countries.” That rules out driving on your GEICO policy in Germany, Japan, or Korea. GEICO Insurance Agency quotes a separate policy through partner carriers, with a country list that names Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom, plus an “Other” option. That overseas policy does not cover you back in the States either, so a car you ship home needs a U.S. policy again before it is driven off the port. Canada is the one exception for a visit: GEICO’s Canada page says U.S. coverage “does extend north of the border,” but GEICO does not insure Canadian residents, so a PCS to Canada also goes through the partner list.
That leaves three choices for the car you own on PCS day. Ship it and insure it locally through the partner. Store it stateside under the Storage Protection Plan. Or end the obligation. If it is a lease you signed before the orders, a PCS from the continental United States to a station outside it is a vehicle lease termination trigger under § 3955, and the car comes off the GEICO policy once it goes back. GEICO, not the SCRA, decides any refund of the premium you prepaid. Run the lease termination calculator before you choose. The rest of the move is on PCS money moves.
Stationed in Louisiana: state law sets 25%
GEICO’s pages do not mention it, but Louisiana law reaches every auto insurer authorized to do business there. La. R.S. 22:1482, read on the Legislature’s site October 10, 2026, says each such insurer “shall provide” active duty, reservist, and Louisiana Air and Army National Guard personnel “based in this state” a discount of “twenty-five percent of the premium on any automobile liability insurance policy” covering vehicles they own. The Department of Insurance’s Regulation 81 (Louisiana Administrative Code Title 37, § 9509 and § 9511) narrows both halves. You must be “serving on full time active duty status,” which includes Reserve and Guard members only on those terms. And the 25% applies only to the premium for bodily injury and property damage liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage. You claim it on the Louisiana Application for Military Discount, with your PCS orders attached. Neither GEICO nor the rule says how it combines with GEICO’s own military discount, so ask whether they stack. More Louisiana rules are on the Louisiana page.
What each GEICO lever is worth
GEICO publishes one number. Here it is against an illustrative $1,440 annual premium ($120 a month), half of it for liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage. Your split is on your declarations page.
| Lever | GEICO’s published figure | On the $1,440 illustration |
|---|---|---|
| Military Discount | Up to 15% of total premium | Up to $216 a year ($18 a month) |
| Emergency Deployment Discount | None printed | Unknown until GEICO quotes it |
| Membership Discount | None printed; one per policy | Unknown |
| Storage Protection Plan | ”Suspend or reduce” coverage; no figure | Depends on the lines you drop |
| Louisiana-based member on full-time active duty (state law) | 25% of the liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist premium | $180 a year, applied to the $720 share only |
The Louisiana row follows Regulation 81 as printed in the Office of the State Register’s September 2026 edition of the Louisiana Administrative Code. The Department of Insurance’s own site blocked automated reading on October 10, 2026, so confirm the credit on your declarations page.
Set up GEICO before you deploy or PCS
- Call 1-800-MILITARY (645-4827) and ask for the military discount rate your state allows. Name your status exactly: active, retired, Guard, Reserve, or separated veteran.
- If the car will sit 30 days or more, give GEICO the storage address and enroll it in the Storage Protection Plan. Financed? Get the lender’s written list of required coverages first.
- With orders to an imminent danger pay area, ask for the Emergency Deployment Discount on the same call and ask for the percentage in writing.
- Give third-party authorization to the person who will handle the policy while you are gone. Set up EFT so a missed bill does not lapse the policy.
- PCS overseas: quote the overseas policy through GEICO’s partner before the car ships. A lease on an OCONUS PCS can end under § 3955.
- Coming home: notify GEICO the car is back in use and restore liability before it moves.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3958
Enforcement of storage liens: read the statute , or read § 3958 in plain English, with its enforcement record .
Frequently asked questions
What is the GEICO military discount?
GEICO's military discounts page, read October 10, 2026, says active duty, military retirees, and National Guard or Reserve members "may be eligible for a discount of up to 15 percent on your total insurance premium." Its military FAQ words the group as "current and former military members, including the National Guard," and its military benefits brochure says the discounts apply "in most states," so the 15% is a ceiling, not a promise everywhere. On an illustrative $1,440 annual premium, the full 15% is $216 a year. GEICO says to claim it by calling (800) MILITARY (645-4827).
What is the GEICO emergency deployment discount?
It is a separate GEICO credit for members who "deploy into imminent danger pay areas," which GEICO's page says are designated by the Department of Defense and approved by Congress. GEICO lists two conditions: you have orders to one of those areas, and your vehicle is stored under one of GEICO's approved storage protection plans. It adds that geographic limits apply, some operations are excluded, and the discount is not available in all states. No GEICO page read on October 10, 2026 gives a percentage, so get the number for your state on the phone before you count on it.
Does GEICO let me store my car during deployment?
Yes. GEICO's Military Storage Protection page says that if your military duties require you to store your vehicle for 30 days or more, GEICO "can suspend or reduce your insurance coverage." Enrollment is by phone: its military FAQ says to call 1-800-MILITARY (645-4827) or a local GEICO agent with the location where the car will be stored. GEICO publishes no savings figure for the plan. Its deployment center tells you to notify GEICO when the car is back in use, so the coverage you dropped is restored before anyone drives it.
What is the GEICO military customer service number?
GEICO prints 1-800-MILITARY, which is (800) 645-4827, on its military discounts page, its military FAQ, its storage protection page, and its pre-deployment checklist (all read October 10, 2026). GEICO's about page says the Military Center is in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and that its military team are military retirees. For an existing overseas policy, the account menu on GEICO's military pages gives a separate address, overseas@geico.com; new overseas quotes go through GEICO's overseas page, which routes them to partner carriers by country. GEICO's contact block says it is reachable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with the app or website as the quickest route.
Does GEICO cover my car if I PCS overseas?
Not under your U.S. policy. GEICO's overseas insurance page, read October 10, 2026, says: "Our auto insurance policies do not extend coverage to you in foreign countries." For a car you ship or buy abroad, GEICO Insurance Agency places you with partner carriers, and its country list names Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, and other countries. The same page says an overseas policy does not cover driving in the United States. Keep the U.S. policy only for a car that stays stateside, in storage or with family.
Is GEICO military insurance available to veterans?
Yes for the policy, maybe for the discount. GEICO's military landing page lists veterans, active duty, National Guard, and Reserve as eligible for military car insurance, and its FAQ answers "Yes" to whether GEICO insures veterans. The discount wording is narrower on the discounts page, which names active duty, retired, Guard, and Reserve, while the FAQ says "current and former military members." A veteran who did not retire should ask the Military Center which rule your state's rate filing uses, and get the answer before you switch policies.
