Liberty Mutual Military Discount: No % Printed, Varies by State
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
Liberty Mutual does offer a military discount, unlike Progressive and Allstate, whose discount pages list none, but it tells you almost nothing about it. The discounts page names who qualifies and stops there: no percentage, no coverage list, no instructions. The fine print says the size and even the existence of the discount depend on your state. Liberty Mutual’s pages were read on October 10, 2026. What to drop on a car you park for a deployment, by how you own it, is on the deployment car insurance page. This page covers what Liberty Mutual itself prints and how to price around the gaps.

“Specific coverages only” is the line that matters most for your wallet, though the disclaimer prints the same sentence under its multi-car and new teen driver discounts, so it is boilerplate, not a military-specific limit. A discount that touches only one or two lines of your policy is worth far less than the same percentage of the whole bill. Until Liberty Mutual names the lines, treat any figure from a comparison site as unverified.
”Active, Retired, or Reserved”: read the words
The eligibility sentence names three groups. Active duty is in. Military retirees are in. Reserve members are in. Three groups are not named: veterans who separated without retiring, military spouses, and the National Guard. The page does not name the Guard, so a Guard member should ask before relying on it. Spouses who hold the policy in their own name should ask whether the member’s status carries over; the broader rules for families are on the spouses and families page, and Guard status questions are on the Guard and Reserve page.
The state pages tell the same story in different words. Liberty Mutual served 49 state and District of Columbia auto pages on October 10, 2026 (its California and Hawaii addresses redirect to the national car insurance page), and three of the 49 mention the military discount. Georgia lists savings for “military service.” Kentucky says “We also offer student and military discounts.” Maryland says Liberty Mutual “offers discounts if you … are an active member of the military,” a narrower phrase than the national page. Silence on the other 46 pages does not mean the discount is missing there, only that Liberty Mutual’s marketing does not mention it.
Louisiana: the discount the law sets
Liberty Mutual’s Louisiana page is one of the 46 that say nothing about military service, yet Louisiana law reaches Liberty Mutual the same as any insurer authorized there. La. R.S. 22:1482, read on the Legislature’s site October 10, 2026, says each such insurer “shall provide” active duty, military reservist, and Louisiana Air and Army National Guard personnel “based in this state” a discount of “twenty-five percent of the premium on any automobile liability insurance policy” for vehicles they own. The Department of Insurance’s Regulation 81 (Louisiana Administrative Code Title 37, § 9509 and § 9511, September 2026 edition) limits it to members “serving on full time active duty status,” Reserve and Guard included on those terms, and applies it only to the liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist premium. You claim it on the Louisiana Application for Military Discount. Neither the statute nor the rule says whether it stacks with an insurer’s own military discount. See the Louisiana page for more state rules.
Parking the car, moving, and going overseas
None of the Liberty Mutual pages read for this article describes a storage program. Its comprehensive coverage page does say comprehensive “can also help protect your vehicle while it’s in storage and/or while it’s parked and not being driven,” including rodent damage. Ask the agent which lines can come off while the car sits, and get the answer in writing before the date.
For a PCS, Liberty Mutual’s moving article says to report a move even when it is temporary, that an out-of-state move may mean starting a new policy with the same company, and that you “may only have 30 to 90 days” to update insurance, license, and registration. Its cancelling page says the cancellation process and “possible fees” vary by state, and that a customer of three years or more may qualify for a new rate depending on the state. A car leased before you got orders from the continental United States to an overseas station can be returned under § 3955; the car lease termination guide has the steps, and the car then comes off the Liberty Mutual policy on Liberty Mutual’s terms. Car tax at the new station is a separate issue; see the military car tax exemption page.
Overseas, Liberty Mutual’s own words are general. Its Mexico page says “most United States auto insurance policies are invalid or very limited in Mexico” and sends drivers to partner MexPro. Its rental article says “many U.S. auto insurers won’t cover rental cars outside the country.” Neither states Liberty Mutual’s own territory, so read the “policy territory” wording in your contract and buy host-country coverage for a car you drive abroad.
Pricing a discount with no published number
Liberty Mutual prints figures for other programs, each with limits. Here they are against an illustrative $1,500 annual premium, $750 of it for liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage. Liberty Mutual says RightTrack and the online savings apply to certain coverages only, so the whole-premium figures overstate them.
| Program | Liberty Mutual’s printed figure | At that rate on the $1,500 illustration |
|---|---|---|
| Military Discount | None | Quote with and without |
| RightTrack | Initial discount, then “up to 30%” for safe driving; certain coverages only | $450 at 30% of the whole premium |
| Customized online purchase | ”12% or more” average; not in CA, NY, HI, MT, WY, ND, SD, AK, or NC | $180 at 12% of the whole premium |
| Louisiana-based member on full-time active duty (state law) | 25% of the liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist premium | $187.50 on the $750 share |
The Louisiana row follows Regulation 81 as printed in the Office of the State Register’s September 2026 code; the Department of Insurance’s own site blocked automated reading on October 10, 2026. For the Military Discount row, the method is simple: ask the agent for two quotes on identical coverages, one with your military status and one without. The difference is your discount, in dollars, for your state.
Price and protect a Liberty Mutual policy around orders
- Ask for the Military Discount by name and state your category: active, retired, or Reserve. Guard members and veterans, ask whether you qualify.
- Get two quotes on identical coverages, with and without military status, and keep both.
- Louisiana-based: ask for the state military discount under La. R.S. 22:1482 and send orders showing your Louisiana duty station.
- Parking the car for a deployment: ask which lines can come off while comprehensive stays, in writing. Financed? Clear it with the lender first.
- PCS: call 800-290-8711 before the move to quote the new state and ask about any cancellation fee. Leased car on OCONUS orders? Run the lease termination calculator.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3955
Termination of residential or motor vehicle leases: read the statute , or read § 3955 in plain English, with its enforcement record .
Frequently asked questions
Does Liberty Mutual have a military discount?
Yes. Liberty Mutual's car insurance discounts page, read October 10, 2026, lists a "Military Discount" for those who are "Active, Retired, or Reserved in the U.S. Armed Forces." The page gives no percentage and no instructions. Its customer disclaimer adds that the discount is available "where state laws and regulations allow," may vary by state and by how you purchase, and that "certain discounts apply to specific coverages only." Ask for it by name when you quote, and confirm it appears on the declarations page, because only the discounts filed in your state can be applied.
How much is the Liberty Mutual military discount?
Liberty Mutual does not say. Neither its discounts page nor its customer disclaimer, both read October 10, 2026, prints a percentage or a dollar figure for the Military Discount, and the disclaimer says certain discounts apply only to specific coverages. That means the value depends on your state's filing and on which coverage lines it touches. The only reliable number is your own: quote identical coverages twice, once with your military status and once without, and compare. In Louisiana, state law R.S. 22:1482 and the state's Regulation 81 set a separate military discount of 25% of the liability, medical payments, and uninsured motorist premium for members on full-time active duty.
Does Liberty Mutual give veterans a military discount?
Its discounts page does not name veterans. The eligibility line, read October 10, 2026, is "Active, Retired, or Reserved in the U.S. Armed Forces." A military retiree is named. A veteran who served a term and separated without retiring is not, and neither are spouses or the National Guard by name. Liberty Mutual's Georgia page describes the discount as savings for "military service" and its Maryland page as being "an active member of the military," so the wording shifts by state. Ask the agent which definition your state uses before you rely on the discount.
Can I pause Liberty Mutual insurance while deployed?
Not that its pages say. A search of its discounts page, customer disclaimer, comprehensive coverage page, moving article, cancellation page, rental and Mexico pages, and the auto resources index on October 10, 2026 found no storage or pause program. Its comprehensive coverage page does say comprehensive "can also help protect your vehicle while it's in storage" or parked, including rodent damage. So ask whether liability and collision can come off a parked car while comprehensive stays, get the answer in writing, and check the lender's requirements on a financed car first.
How do I cancel Liberty Mutual before a PCS?
By phone. Liberty Mutual's cancelling page, read October 10, 2026, says "the process and possible fees for policy cancellation varies according to the insurance regulations in your state" and gives 800-290-8711 for cancellations. The same page says that if you are moving to a new state you "may not need to switch providers" and to call that number for a quote in your new home state. Its moving article says to report even a temporary relocation, and that an out-of-state move may require a new policy within 30 to 90 days, depending on the state.
