What Select Portfolio Servicing (SPS) owes you

The cap is retroactive to your first day of active duty, and the excess interest is forgiven rather than deferred. Put your numbers in to see the size of your claim, then generate the letter that asks for it.

Simple-interest estimate on a fixed balance, capped at 6%: the 6% statutory ceiling (50 U.S.C. § 3937). Select Portfolio Servicing (SPS) publishes no lower rate, so 6% is your guaranteed floor. A revolving balance that moved over the period will differ. It sizes the claim; it is not an amortization schedule and not legal advice.

Select Portfolio Servicing has an SCRA statement, but you have to know where to click. It is not in the main menu, the FAQ, or the site map. It sits behind a tab labeled “Servicemembers Civil Relief Act” on the Request Assistance page, next to tabs for applying for mortgage assistance and finding government counseling. Here is the operative part in full, as read on November 2, 2026:

“SPS is committed to home ownership assistance for active service members and veterans of the United States military. If you or your spouse is serving on active military duty, including active military duty of the National Guard or as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, you may be entitled to certain interest rate and foreclosure protections under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Please contact SPS at (888) 818-6032 to speak to one of our experienced Loan Servicing Representatives about qualification and application requirements.”

That is the whole SCRA process SPS publishes: one phone number. No rate, no address for orders, no list of documents, no timeline. The phone number is real and it is SCRA-specific in the sense that SPS points servicemembers to it. But it is also the line SPS’s contact page labels Assistance Programs, the loss-mitigation desk. That one detail shapes how you should handle the call.

The statute does the heavy lifting here. A mortgage you took on before active duty cannot carry more than 6% during your service and for one year after. The interest above 6% is forgiven, and your monthly payment must drop by that amount under § 3937(a)(3). No one can complete a sale or foreclosure on that mortgage during the same window without a court order under § 3953(c). Size the dollar value on your balance with the savings calculator. The mortgage guide covers the rest of the mortgage rules.

Getting the cap applied at SPS

File your SCRA request with Select Portfolio Servicing

  1. Confirm the loan closed before your active-duty start date. If the loan was transferred to SPS, the original closing date controls, not the date SPS took over.
  2. Call (888) 818-6032 (Mon to Fri 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sat 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET). Say you are requesting the interest rate cap under 50 U.S.C. § 3937, not a modification. Ask where SPS wants the orders sent. Write down the date and the representative’s name.
  3. Send a written notice and a copy of your orders (or a certified letter from your commanding officer) by the route SPS gives you. If it gives none, mail it with tracking to Select Portfolio Servicing, Inc., P.O. Box 65250, Salt Lake City, UT 84165-0250, its published general correspondence address. The letter generator drafts the notice.
  4. Put your SPS account number on every page, including the orders.
  5. Ask for the applied rate, the start date (your first day of duty), and the end date (service plus one year) in writing.
  6. Check the next statement for a lower payment and a credit back to your start date. If SPS has not acted, the refund guide covers how to get the overpaid interest back.

The deadline is generous but real. Under § 3937(b)(1) you must deliver written notice and orders no later than 180 days after release from service. Once SPS has them, § 3937(b)(2) makes the cap effective from the date you were called to duty. A slow review costs you a wait, not the benefit. Check your dates in the deadline checker.

Where SPS borrowers lose the cap

The call lands on the mortgage assistance line. The SCRA paragraph sits inside SPS’s mortgage assistance section, and the number it gives is the Assistance Programs line. The programs SPS lists on that page are modification, payment deferral, repayment plan, short sale, and deed-in-lieu. None of those is the SCRA rate cap. They are hardship tools with their own terms. The 6% cap is different: it forgives the interest above 6% by law, under § 3937(a)(2). If you are offered a “program,” say again that you want the § 3937 rate reduction, and ask for it in writing.

“Veterans” and “your spouse.” SPS addresses “active service members and veterans” and “you or your spouse.” The 6% cap is narrower than both. A veteran gets it only for debt that predates service, and only until one year after service ends, with notice due within 180 days of release. Under § 3937(a)(1), the cap covers debt incurred by the servicemember, or by the servicemember and spouse jointly. A mortgage solely in a non-serving spouse’s name is outside it. The spouses and families guide explains the split.

Transfers into SPS need a second look. Its New to SPS page opens by explaining that it is common in the mortgage industry for servicing to move from one servicer to another. A capped rate is exactly the kind of flag that drops in a boarding. Send your orders and your old servicer’s SCRA confirmation the week the welcome letter arrives. The mortgage servicer guide covers what carries over.

Escalation is published, just not for the SCRA. SPS’s contact page sends unresolved issues to its Consumer Ombudsman Department after a first call to Customer Service at 800-258-8602. Notices of error and requests for information go to P.O. Box 65277, Salt Lake City, UT 84165-0277. If SPS will not apply a cap you have documented, put it in writing to that box, then use the escalation playbook. See where SPS ranks against servicers that publish a full process on the bank leaderboard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SPS SCRA phone number?

(888) 818-6032. SPS's Servicemembers Civil Relief Act paragraph tells you to call that number "to speak to one of our experienced Loan Servicing Representatives about qualification and application requirements" (read November 2, 2026). The contact page lists the same number as the Assistance Programs line, with phone hours of Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern. SPS publishes no separate military desk.

Where do I send my orders to Select Portfolio Servicing?

SPS prints no SCRA-specific address. Ask on the call where it wants the orders, and get the answer in writing. Its published written routes are General Correspondence at Select Portfolio Servicing, Inc., P.O. Box 65250, Salt Lake City, UT 84165-0250, the general correspondence fax lines 1-801-293-3936 or 1-866-867-3019, and a document upload that requires signing in to your SPS account (all read November 2, 2026). Put your account number on every page.

What interest rate does SPS give servicemembers under the SCRA?

SPS publishes no figure. Its page says only "interest rate and foreclosure protections." The statute fills the gap: a mortgage you took on before active duty cannot bear more than 6% during your service and for one year after, the interest above 6% is forgiven, and your payment must drop by the forgiven amount (50 U.S.C. 3937(a)). If your SPS rate is already 6% or lower, the cap changes nothing.

My loan was just transferred to SPS. Do I have to file for the SCRA again?

Assume yes. The cap attaches to the loan, so a transfer should not end it, but SPS's new-customer page describes taking over accounts from other servicers and SPS publishes nothing about carrying SCRA rates across. Send SPS your orders and the prior servicer's SCRA confirmation as soon as the welcome letter arrives, and check the first SPS statement for the capped rate.
