The 6% Interest Rate Cap
SoFi SCRA Benefits: 6% Cap, SCRA@sofi.org, and the Member Portal
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
What SoFi owes you
The cap is retroactive to your first day of active duty, and the excess interest is forgiven rather than deferred. Put your numbers in to see the size of your claim, then generate the letter that asks for it.
Simple-interest estimate on a fixed balance, capped at 6%: the 6% statutory ceiling (50 U.S.C. § 3937). SoFi publishes no lower rate, so 6% is your guaranteed floor. A revolving balance that moved over the period will differ. It sizes the claim; it is not an amortization schedule and not legal advice.
Write the letter to SoFi
Written notice is what starts the clock. Fill these in and the letter below is yours to copy, print, and send with a copy of your orders.
Where to send it: "Unlock benefits" on sofi.com/scra-military-benefits opens the military benefits page in your member account (sofi.com/member-home/military-benefits); "apply now" uploads documents; chat after login
Nothing you type here leaves your browser. The letter is built on this device.
SoFi sells personal loans, student loan refinancing, private student loans, mortgages, auto refinancing, and a credit card, and one SCRA page covers all of it. The page, titled “Active Duty SCRA Military Benefits,” lists three items: lower eligible payments with a 6% interest rate cap, foreclosure protection, and no late payment penalties (verified August 2026). Its FAQ adds the mechanics: for debt incurred before active duty, the 6% maximum is applied on the active-duty start date and payments are reduced to match. Nothing under 6% is published, and no processing time is stated.
Two things are absent that you should notice. There is no public web form; the “Unlock benefits” button opens the military benefits page inside your member account. And there is no separate SCRA phone line; SoFi routes questions to its Specialty Servicing team through the general number, an email address, and chat.
The savings are real on SoFi’s higher-rate products. A $20,000 five-year personal loan at 18% opened before you entered service accrues about $3,600 of interest in year one; at 6% it is about $1,200, and the difference is forgiven under § 3937(a)(2). Check your own balances in the savings calculator.

Filing at SoFi
Apply for SCRA benefits at SoFi
- List every SoFi product opened before your active-duty start date: personal loan, student loan refinance, private student loan, mortgage, auto refinance, credit card. Note each account number.
- Log in at sofi.com and open sofi.com/scra-military-benefits, then click Unlock benefits to reach the military benefits page in your account. Use apply now to upload your orders, a commanding officer letter, or your DMDC certificate.
- Email a written § 3937 request from the letter generator, with the same documents, to SCRA@sofi.org so a dated notice exists outside the portal.
- Questions or a stalled file: call (855) 456-SOFI (7634) and ask for Specialty Servicing, or chat after login, during the hours above.
- Confirm on each next statement that the rate reads 6%, the payment dropped, and the adjustment reaches back to your duty start date. On a SoFi mortgage the cap runs one year past service by statute.
- Overpaid before you filed? Follow the refund guide, and keep every SoFi confirmation.
Where SoFi members trip
Confusing member perks with SCRA rights. SoFi’s site is built around member benefits: SoFi Plus, rewards points, referral bonuses, and checking features such as early direct deposit access, which its banking page describes as typically up to two days before the scheduled payment date, but may vary. None of that is SCRA. The SCRA page lists three items, and only those three, plus whatever the statute guarantees, are enforceable rights. Perks are marketing that SoFi can end.
Refinancing during service. SoFi is a refinance lender, and a refinance signed after your active-duty start date is a new obligation dated during service. SoFi states eligibility requires holding the product prior to being called to active duty. Refinancing federal loans during service also trades away the automatic 6% treatment federal servicers apply through DMDC matching; the student loans guide walks through that trade.
Spouse and dependent accounts. SoFi’s promise for a spouse, domestic partner, or dependent account is limited to what individual states require. That is narrower than joint pre-service debt, which § 3937 covers when the servicemember and spouse signed together. If a joint SoFi loan is refused, the spouse and family guide and the escalation playbook apply.
The MLA sentence. SoFi’s FAQ says it has already covered you for MLA benefits at origination. That refers to accounts opened during service and the 36% MAPR ceiling; it does not cap a during-service SoFi loan at 6%, and it does not replace the SCRA filing for pre-service loans.
No clock, no line. With no published processing time and no dedicated SCRA number, the fix is documentation: portal upload, an email to SCRA@sofi.org, and a call log. File within 180 days of leaving service at the latest per the deadlines guide, and compare SoFi with lenders that publish faster clocks on the bank leaderboard.

Frequently asked questions
What SCRA rate does SoFi give?
SoFi states a maximum interest rate of 6% on debt incurred before you entered active duty, applied on the active-duty start date, with payments reduced to reflect the lower rate (verified August 2026). That is the statutory figure under 50 U.S.C. § 3937. SoFi publishes nothing below 6% and adds two listed protections: foreclosure protection and no late payment penalties.
How do I apply for SCRA benefits at SoFi?
Log in and use "Unlock benefits" on sofi.com/scra-military-benefits, which opens the military benefits page in your member account; SoFi says to use the "apply now" option there to upload your orders, a commanding officer letter on military letterhead, or any official notification of active duty. Questions go to Specialty Servicing at SCRA@sofi.org, (855) 456-SOFI (7634), or chat after login. Hours are Monday to Thursday 5:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday to Sunday 5:00 am to 5:00 pm Pacific.
Does SoFi extend SCRA benefits to a spouse or dependent account?
Only where a state requires it. SoFi states that if a servicemember spouse, domestic partner, or dependent opens an account and the servicemember is then called to active duty, SoFi will extend the benefits when required by individual states. A loan the servicemember and spouse signed jointly before service is different: § 3937 covers obligations incurred by the servicemember and spouse jointly.
I refinanced my student loans with SoFi after I entered service. Is that loan capped?
By SoFi terms, no. SoFi states that servicemembers may receive SCRA benefits only on products they had prior to being called to active duty, and a refinance signed during service is a new obligation dated during service. The Military Lending Act governs credit opened during service, and SoFi states it has already covered you for MLA benefits at origination. If the loans you refinanced were federal, note that federal servicers apply the 6% cap automatically through DMDC matching; read the student loans guide on this site before refinancing during service.
Are early paycheck, SoFi Plus, and member rewards part of SCRA?
No. Those are SoFi product features that SoFi sets and can change; its banking page, for example, describes early direct deposit access as typically up to two days before the scheduled payment date, but may vary. The SCRA cap, retroactivity, and forgiveness of excess interest are federal law and do not depend on SoFi marketing.
