Vivint Military Cancellation Policy: Deployment, PCS, and the SCRA

Vivint publishes a Military Family policy on its support site and as a dated PDF (version 2024.06), both read August 15, 2026: three programs, one phone number, and a closing sentence that deserves its own section. Vivint’s general cancellation page says early termination fees can apply under its service agreement and that equipment financing is a separate third-party agreement, so two balances are in play on any early exit.

Vivint’s three military programs

Eligibility on Vivint’s page: active U.S. military personnel, or personnel discharged in the prior 12 months. Other veterans and dependents are not eligible, and an account in a spouse’s or domestic partner’s name is considered “at our sole discretion.” Vivint adds that participation “does not allow cancellation of a service agreement outside of the qualifying program conditions”: a plain discharge, for example, gets a free move or a transfer to a friend, not a cancellation.

The SCRA sentence

The last line of Vivint’s policy reads: “The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) does not apply to Vivint alarm service agreements.” Its FAQ repeats it.

Set that beside the statute. 50 U.S.C. § 3956(b), as amended in January 2023 and in force today, lists six covered contract types, and the sixth is “home security services.” The section lets a servicemember terminate a covered contract entered before receiving orders to relocate for 90 days or more to a location that does not support it, bars any early termination charge, requires prepaid amounts refunded within 60 days, and requires the provider to give written or electronic notice of these rights. In April 2026 the DOJ settled a § 3956 case with ADT, the largest home security company in the country, over a notice policy applied to 3,400 servicemembers; the case record is on this site.

Whether a particular Vivint agreement is a “contract for home security services” is a legal question this page cannot answer for you, and Vivint’s page answers it one way. What is free is to write the statute into your notice: your name, the account, the termination date, “terminating under 50 U.S.C. § 3956,” and a copy of the orders. If Vivint approves the cancellation under its own program, nothing more is needed. How to apply at Vivint

Cancel, move, or defer Vivint on orders

1. Call Vivint Customer Support at 1 (800) 678-2635 and name the program: Military Cancellation, Military Moves, or Military Deferment.
2. Send the documents Vivint asks for: current orders (deployment orders, PCS orders, retirement or medical discharge paperwork). For Moves and Deferments, Vivint says to email them to documents@vivint.com. For a Cancellation, follow the representative’s submission instructions and ask for the address in writing.
3. Add your own written notice: account number, requested termination date, and a line citing 50 U.S.C. § 3956. The letter generator drafts it in a minute.
4. Note the call date and the document date. Vivint says review begins within three to five business days of receipt.
5. Check your equipment financing separately. Vivint’s cancellation page says third-party financing balances survive the cancellation.
6. Watch the next statement for the monitoring charge and any early termination fee. If either appears, call the same number with your dates.

Things members trip on at Vivint

The equipment loan is not the monitoring contract. Many Vivint systems are financed through a third-party lender in a separate agreement. Vivint’s own cancellation page says that balance stays owed. Cancelling monitoring under the military program removes the monthly service fee and its early termination fee, not the hardware debt.

“Even on the same base” cuts both ways. Vivint’s cancellation program covers a move to a new location on the same base, but its move program excludes on-base installs entirely (Vivint says it cannot install or service on base). If you are moving into base housing, cancellation is the program that fits, and you need the orders plus the on-base lease.

Deferment is a pause, not a discount. Under 12 months away, Vivint suspends the agreement and freezes the term. Its page does not say what bills during the pause; ask before you choose it over cancellation.

Discharge alone does not qualify. Vivint’s FAQ says a regular discharge is not grounds to cancel; medical discharge with a relocation is. Retirement counts only at 20 or more years.

Case-by-case is the operating word. Vivint’s page and PDF both say it cannot cancel “anytime for any reason” and that reviews are individual. Get the outcome in writing, with the effective date.

Discount, separately. Vivint’s only military discount is 50% off additional products bought for a new residence under an approved military move. It is a program perk, not a benefit under any statute.
