Break Leases & Contracts Penalty-Free
Brightspeed Military: $9.95 Vacation Hold, or a $600 Router Fee
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
No page in Brightspeed’s site map offers a military discount, and its September 2026 Subscriber Agreement never mentions service members (read October 10, 2026). It does have two tools that matter on orders: a cheap hold for a deployment of nine months or less, and no contract to break for anything longer. The one number that can hurt is printed in the agreement’s equipment section, and it is higher than Brightspeed’s own help page says.
Brightspeed’s terms against § 3956
Section 3956 lets a servicemember end internet and phone contracts signed before orders that relocate them for 90 days or more to a place the contract does not support. The phone, cable, and internet guide has the general rule. Brightspeed’s documents, checked October 10, 2026:
| Item | Brightspeed says | On qualifying orders |
|---|---|---|
| Military discount | None published | Not a federal right |
| Contract | ”No annual contracts or termination fees” on fiber plans | ETF barred anyway, § 3956(e)(1) |
| Hold option | Vacation Service, $9.95 a month for internet, 1 to 9 months | No federal hold right |
| Last partial cycle | No prorated credit after termination | Current period excluded, § 3956(f) |
| Router back | 30 days, or $200 or $600 | 10 days after disconnection, § 3956(e)(3) |
| How to cancel | Account portal or 833-692-7773 | Notice plus orders and a date, § 3956(a)(3) |
The agreement’s billing section says your cancellation is effective on the day you terminate and “you will not receive a prorated credit or refund for any remaining days.” The statute allows that, since § 3956(f) excludes the billing period you cancel in. Cancel near the end of a cycle.
Hold or cancel: a deployment worked out
Brightspeed’s homepage listed Fiber 1 Gig at $49.99 a month with autopay and paperless billing on October 10, 2026. The Vacation Service table, in the default view of the help page, listed internet at $9.95 a month, a 50% discount on a primary phone line, and no charge for the modem, for one to nine months in most areas. Brightspeed says rates vary by ZIP code, and neither the help page nor the agreement says whether fiber plans qualify, so confirm in chat. Using those figures for a six-month deployment with an empty house:
- Keep paying: 6 × $49.99 = $299.94.
- Vacation Service: 6 × $9.95 = $59.70, a $240.24 saving. The router stays home, and you keep your phone number and email.
- Cancel: $0 a month after the final bill, but the router must ship within 10 days, and you reorder when you return.
For six months the hold costs $59.70 and keeps your number, email, and router in place; cancelling costs nothing monthly but means a return now and a new order later. The help page warns that if you have not reactivated within nine months, the discount comes off and billing resumes at full price while the service stays on hold. The agreement’s Pause Service clause says instead that service resumes automatically after nine months, allows one pause in a rolling 12 months, and warns that promotions may be cancelled. Either way, month ten is billed at full price. Past nine months, cancel on the orders.
If you get TV from DISH or DIRECTV alongside Brightspeed internet, the hold page says to call that provider directly. Their rules are on the DISH and DIRECTV pages.
The router fee: $200 or $600
Section 13(c) of the September 2026 agreement says leased gear must be back within 30 days of termination. If it is not, Brightspeed may charge $200 for a router or modem that is not WiFi 7, $600 for a WiFi 7 router or modem, and full retail cost for other leased equipment. It may also charge the fee up front and credit it back only if the gear arrives in time.
Brightspeed’s cancellation article still says “an equipment charge of up to $200.” Its current fiber plans advertise a WiFi 7 enabled router. If yours is WiFi 7, plan on the agreement’s $600 figure.
What to return, per the return article: DSL modems and routers (C3000, C4000), fiber routers (u6, 7u10t, C4000), mesh extenders (u4m, u4hm, 7u6m), power cords, power supplies, and included Ethernet cables. Do not return the fiber ONT (models 1100 and 1101) or anything labeled as Brightspeed property not to be removed. Start the return online for a UPS label or a QR code for The UPS Store, and keep the receipt.
Cancelling on orders
Call 833-692-7773 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, the hours on Brightspeed’s cancellation article. Its seasonal-hold notice page prints 1-833-629-7773 next to the letters MYBRSPD, which actually spell 692-7773. The cancellation article and agreement both use 692.
Two more items before you call. A deposit, plus any interest, is applied to the final balance, and a closing bill comes by mail. The prepaid Mastercard offer requires keeping qualifying service for at least 90 days after installation, with the redemption code emailed at day 90. The statute bars early termination charges; its text says nothing about rewards tied to staying 90 days, so do not count on the card if orders arrive early.
If the new duty station is inside Brightspeed’s 20-state footprint, its moving article says a transfer needs no new deposit and new service can start before the old one stops. Brightspeed took over CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber accounts in its territory on October 3, 2022, per its welcome pages; Lumen’s remaining CenturyLink rules are on the CenturyLink military page.
Hold or cancel Brightspeed on orders
- Count the months. Nine or fewer with the house empty: Vacation Service. Longer, or a move outside Brightspeed’s area: cancel. Check that the orders qualify with the eligibility checker.
- Hold: chat with Brightspeed, confirm your ZIP code’s rate and that your plan qualifies, and mark the nine-month end date on your calendar.
- Cancel: call 833-692-7773 near the end of a billing cycle and send written notice with your orders and end date. The letter generator drafts it, and the deadline checker turns your disconnect date into the 10-day equipment deadline.
- Ask Brightspeed in writing whether your router is WiFi 7 and what fee applies if it is late.
- Start the online return and drop the router and extenders at The UPS Store within 10 days of disconnection. Leave the ONT on the wall.
- Check the closing bill for a pre-charged equipment fee and make sure it is credited back.
The rest of the pre-deployment list is in the deployment readiness checklist, and the same orders usually let you break an apartment lease.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3956
Termination of certain consumer contracts: internet access, mobile, landline, TV, gym, and home security: read the statute , or read § 3956 in plain English, with its enforcement record .
Frequently asked questions
Does Brightspeed have a military discount?
Not one it publishes. No page in Brightspeed's 766-URL site map offers a military or veteran discount, and its Subscriber Agreement dated September 2026 has no clause about service members (read October 10, 2026). Its homepage offer is a prepaid Mastercard of up to $250 for new fiber customers, and its fiber offer terms describe a 12-month price lock on the plan rate. Brightspeed took over the CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber accounts in its area on October 3, 2022, so CenturyLink's terms no longer govern them.
Can I put Brightspeed on hold while I am deployed?
Yes, in most areas. Brightspeed's Vacation Service, also called seasonal service, holds internet for $9.95 a month for one to nine months, with no charge for the leased modem. You keep your phone number and Brightspeed email and do not return equipment. Start it by chat; you need a zero balance and an eligible area. Rates vary by ZIP code, and if you have not reactivated within nine months, billing returns to full price while service stays off.
Will Brightspeed charge me to cancel when I PCS?
No termination fee. Brightspeed's plan cards say no annual contracts or termination fees, and its agreement lets you cancel at any time through the account portal or by phone. On orders relocating you 90 days or more to a place Brightspeed does not serve, 50 U.S.C. § 3956(e)(1) bars an early termination charge in any case. You will not get a prorated refund for the rest of the cycle, and the router must come back.
What does Brightspeed charge if I do not return the router?
Under section 13(c) of the September 2026 Subscriber Agreement, $200 for a router or modem that is not WiFi 7, $600 for a WiFi 7 router or modem, and full retail cost for other leased gear, if it is not back within 30 days. Brightspeed may charge the fee at termination and credit it back when the gear arrives. Its cancel help page still says up to $200. Do not return the fiber ONT on the wall.
What number do I call to cancel Brightspeed?
Brightspeed's cancellation article says to call 833-692-7773 (MYBRSPD) between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and its agreement lists the same number. Its seasonal-hold notice page prints 1-833-629-7773 beside the same MYBRSPD letters, but those letters spell 692-7773 on a phone keypad. Use 833-692-7773. The agreement also lets you cancel through the account portal; either way, send written notice with your orders so you have the record § 3956(a)(3) calls for.
