Farmers Insurance Military Discount: A Career Discount, No % Printed
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
Farmers does not print a military discount on its car insurance discount list. Its discount pages mention service twice, both on the home side: a career line that may earn a discount, and a homeowners Affinity discount for armed forces members. Neither prints a rate, so the size is left to the agent. For a member with orders, Farmers’ published rules on changing coverage mid-term, its 36-month loyalty features, and its coverage territory matter more than that one line. Every Farmers fact below was read on farmers.com on October 10, 2026. Which coverages a stored car can safely lose, by how you own it and by state, is laid out on the deployment car insurance page.

The career discount: ask for it, prove it, price it
The first military mention is easy to miss. It sits on Farmers’ general discounts page, under the homeowners heading: “Are you a teacher, police officer, firefighter, member of the military, doctor, nurse, dentist, engineer or other professional? You may be eligible for a discount because of your career choice.” The homeowners discount page goes further, for a house rather than a car: its Affinity discount is open to “a member of the armed forces (active duty, reserves, retired or honorably discharged),” again with no rate. The car discount page says Farmers offers “more than 20 discount options,” and none of those it lists, from Signal to Good Payer, is military. Farmers’ auto FAQ closes the gap only partly, saying you could qualify for car insurance savings “based on factors like your profession.”
The state pages do not add a number. Farmers serves car insurance pages for 42 states, and none of them names a military discount; the only military line is on the Virginia page, which tells active-duty members to contact the Virginia DMV or the insurer before registering a car there. If you are stationed in Virginia, the Virginia car tax page covers the property tax side. Farmers’ Louisiana page lists multi-vehicle, youthful driver and bundling discounts and is silent on the state’s own military discount, which reaches every auto insurer authorized there; the details are on the deployment page, and the state’s lease and SCRA rules are on the Louisiana page.
With no published rate, price it yourself: ask for two quotes on identical coverage, one with your military occupation and one without, the method that also works for Liberty Mutual. The difference is your discount in dollars. Then send whatever proof the agent asks for. Farmers’ account FAQ lists “verification of your occupation” among the documents to submit “as soon as you can to prevent unwanted changes to your policy and discount choices.”
Parking the car: pro-rated changes, no storage plan
None of the Farmers pages read describes a storage or suspension program. What Farmers does publish is the mechanism you need. A named insured can change coverage “whenever you wish,” changes usually “take effect immediately,” and you “just pay for the portion you use.” That means you can cut coverage when the car goes into storage and restore it when the car comes out, paying for each level of coverage only while it is in force.
Take an illustrative $125-a-month Farmers policy: $60 for liability, uninsured motorist and medical payments, $40 for collision, and $25 for comprehensive. Find your own numbers on the declarations page.
| Plan for a 9-month deployment | Monthly | 9 months |
|---|---|---|
| Left as is | $125 | $1,125 |
| Financed: comprehensive and collision kept, liability dropped where the state allows | $65 | $585 |
| Paid off: comprehensive only | $25 | $225 |
The paid-off car saves $900; the financed car saves $540. Your loan or lease contract, not Farmers, decides whether collision can go, so get the lender’s answer in writing first. Liability can only come off where your state lets a registered car sit uninsured, which the deployment page covers for California and New York. If the loan predates active duty, the 6% SCRA rate cap is a separate saving.
Why cancelling can cost more at Farmers
Farmers Flex, its newer personal auto policy, gives two features away to long-tenured customers. Accident Forgiveness, which keeps one at-fault accident in each three years from raising your premium, and Declining Deductible, which credits $50 per six-month renewal or $100 per annual renewal without a claim toward your next collision deductible, are both offered at no additional cost after “36 continuous months” as a Flex customer who meets the eligibility rules. Once Declining Deductible is on an annual policy, three claim-free renewals add up to $300 off a collision deductible.
Cancel for a 9-month deployment and the continuous months stop. Keep the policy in force at comprehensive only, at $25 a month in the illustration, and ask the agent to confirm in writing that the months keep counting. Farmers’ switching guide also warns that some insurers charge a fee to cancel before renewal, so ask your agent what your state allows before you cancel mid-term.
PCS: a new state may mean a new agent
Farmers’ moving page says an auto policy can be updated with a new address, unlike home and renters policies, which need a new quote. Moving out of state, “your current agent may not be able to help,” so Farmers connects you with one licensed where you are going, through 800-515-1896. Farmers has car insurance pages for 42 states; if your new state is not among them, ask before you move whether Farmers writes auto policies there. Moving allowances and the other bills a move resets are on PCS money moves.
Overseas, the policy stops at the line. Farmers’ rental car article says its coverage “extends to accidents occurring within the United States, its territories, Puerto Rico and Canada,” and tells you to ask your agent before traveling outside those areas. Its Mexico page says a U.S. policy “is not valid in Mexico” and sells BorderSolutions plans through Chubb and Zurich instead. A car shipped to Germany, Italy, Japan or Korea needs a host-country policy before it is driven. If it is a lease signed before your orders, a PCS from the continental United States to an overseas station lets you end it under § 3955; notice and return rules are in the car lease termination guide, and any premium refund after the return follows Farmers’ own terms. Stateside, if a storage operator claims a lien for unpaid rent, § 3958 requires a court order before any sale during your service and for 90 days after; the storage lien page explains the notice.
Set up a Farmers policy around orders
- Ask your agent for the career discount by name, get two quotes with and without your military occupation, and send occupation proof right away.
- Thirty days before deployment, set the date the car goes into storage and cut to comprehensive only; financed, keep what the lender requires in writing.
- On Farmers Flex, keep the policy in force rather than cancelling, so the 36 continuous months keep counting.
- PCS stateside: call 800-515-1896 for an agent in the new state before you move the car.
- PCS overseas: buy host-country coverage before the car ships. Leased car? Run the lease termination calculator first.
- Before the car leaves storage, call the agent to put liability and collision back on the policy.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3955
Termination of residential or motor vehicle leases: read the statute , or read § 3955 in plain English, with its enforcement record .
Frequently asked questions
Does Farmers Insurance offer a military discount?
Possibly, as a career discount, but not by name for a car. Its car insurance discounts page, read October 10, 2026, names more than 20 discounts and none is for service members. Its homeowners discounts page does offer an Affinity discount to "a member of the armed forces (active duty, reserves, retired or honorably discharged)," with no rate. Its general discounts page asks whether you are a "member of the military" or another professional and says you "may be eligible for a discount because of your career choice," and its auto FAQ says profession can qualify you for car insurance savings. None of Farmers' 42 state car insurance pages names a military discount. Ask the agent directly, and expect to be asked to verify your occupation.
How much is the Farmers military discount?
Farmers does not publish a number. No Farmers page read on October 10, 2026 gives a percentage for a career or occupation discount, and its fine print says discounts and eligibility vary by state. The reliable method is two quotes on identical coverage, one listing your military occupation and one without it; the difference is the discount in dollars for your state. Farmers' account FAQ lists "verification of your occupation" among documents you may need to send to keep your discounts, so send it promptly or the discount can drop off at the next review.
Can I suspend Farmers car insurance while deployed?
Farmers publishes no storage or suspension program on the pages read on October 10, 2026. What it does publish is flexibility: a named insured can change coverage at any time, changes usually take effect immediately, and you "just pay for the portion you use." On a paid-off car that sits for a deployment, that means asking the agent to drop the coverages a parked car does not need and keep comprehensive. A financed or leased car usually must keep comprehensive and collision under the loan or lease, and liability can only go where your state lets a registered car sit without it.
Does Farmers car insurance cover me overseas?
Only in Canada and U.S. territories. Farmers' rental car article, updated August 2025 and read October 10, 2026, says "Farmers coverage extends to accidents occurring within the United States, its territories, Puerto Rico and Canada," and tells you to check with your agent before traveling outside those areas. Its Mexico page says a U.S. policy "is not valid in Mexico" and offers BorderSolutions plans through Chubb and Zurich. A car shipped to Germany, Italy, Japan, or Korea needs a host-country policy before it is driven there.
How do I cancel Farmers insurance?
Through your agent first. Farmers' FAQ, read October 10, 2026, says to contact your agent, and if you have already done so or have no agent, to call 888-327-6335, weekdays 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central and weekends 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Its switching guide warns that some insurers charge a cancellation fee mid-policy and that renewal time usually avoids one, so ask the agent what your state allows. Before a deployment, compare cancelling with cutting to comprehensive: a Flex policy that stays in force keeps counting toward its 36-month loyalty benefits.
