Straight Talk Military: Early Unlock on Orders, a Lapse Ends Service
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
Straight Talk, the prepaid brand sold at Walmart and owned by Verizon Value, shows no military price and no way to park a line during a deployment. Its terms are blunt about timing: no plan redeemed by your Service End Date, and the account is deactivated that day. For a service member, the money questions are what it costs to hold the number, and whether a prepaid 3-, 6-, or 12-month plan comes back when orders cut it short. Every Straight Talk fact below was read on straighttalk.com on October 10, 2026. Its help center, support.straighttalk.com, blocks AI crawlers in its robots.txt and was not read.
Straight Talk’s terms beside § 3956
Straight Talk’s published terms, checked October 10, 2026:
| Item | Straight Talk’s pages say | On qualifying orders under § 3956 |
|---|---|---|
| Military discount | None live; its military-discount pages returned a 404 | Not a federal right |
| Deployment suspension | None published | No pause in the statute; it lets you terminate |
| Missing a renewal | Account deactivated on the Service End Date; number may be lost | No help for a lapse; § 3956(c) keeps the number only after a written § 3956 termination |
| Plan refunds | ”Plans have no cash value and are non-refundable” | Amounts paid past the current billing period refunded within 60 days, § 3956(f) |
| Multi-month plans | Silver: $120 for 90 days, $210 for 180 days, $360 for 365 days | Same § 3956(f) claim; the billing period is disputed |
| Early termination fee | $0.00 on its Broadband Facts labels | None allowed, § 3956(e)(1) |
| Unlocking | 365 days of paid service for phones activated since January 20, 2026; early with relocation orders | Not addressed by the statute |
The statute reaches a mobile service contract you entered before receiving orders, § 3956(b)(2), when the orders relocate you for 90 days or more to a location that does not support it. Straight Talk’s own terms support the second half for an overseas move: it can end service for “good cause,” which includes if you “primarily use data outside our coverage area.” You terminate with written or electronic notice, a copy of the orders, and the date service should stop. The phone and internet cancellation guide covers the rest of the federal rule.
What a year away costs on Silver Unlimited
Silver Unlimited is $45 per 30 days, a price its Broadband Facts label calls “not an introductory rate.” Straight Talk’s terms define the month: “all Plans offered are on a monthly plan cycle where a month equals 30 days,” except multi-month plans. Take a deployment of about a year.
- Pay month to month: 12 × $45 = $540 for 360 days of a line you cannot use. Its label adds $3.09 in one-time fees to each purchase, so the year runs about $577.
- Buy the 1 Year Plan before you go: $360 for 365 days, plus the one-time fees its label lists, $2.88 for the Federal Universal Service Fund and $31.09 for the Reg and Telco Recovery Charge. About $394, or $183 less than month to month.
- Stack plans in Reserve: Straight Talk Reserve applies a stored plan automatically on your Service End Date. That works, but each stored month still costs $45.
- Terminate under § 3956: $0 going forward. The number then rides on § 3956(c), and Straight Talk publishes no process for that. Its terms warn that a reactivated account “may be assigned a new phone number,” so your notice and orders are the record.
Straight Talk’s terms reset the Reg and Telco Recovery Charge to 7% of eligible monthly service charges on November 1, 2026, so the fee figures will move. Of the Silver options, the 1 Year Plan is the cheapest way to hold a number Straight Talk itself keeps alive. Termination is cheaper still, but it trades certainty for a statute you may have to cite.
A 1 Year Plan cut short: the refund claim
Say you bought the $360 Silver 1 Year Plan in January, before any orders, and orders to Korea arrive in April. You terminate during month four. Under § 3956(f), Straight Talk may keep “the remainder of the monthly or similar billing period in which the termination occurs.” Count the plan as twelve months of $30 each and months one through four, $120, are gone. Months five through twelve were paid “for a period extending until after” the termination: 8 × $30 = $240 to claim, due within 60 days on this reading.
That $240 illustrates a claim you can make; Straight Talk has not agreed to pay it. Straight Talk has a clear counter-reading, and it comes from its own terms. The sentence that sets 30-day cycles exempts multi-month plans, so Straight Talk can argue the 365 days are one billing period, all of it the period you terminated in, with nothing to refund. One more wrinkle: the plan’s Broadband Facts label shows a “Monthly Price” of $41.25, which is not $360 divided by 12, and the page does not explain the difference. This example uses the plain arithmetic. The same claim applies, with smaller numbers, to the $120 and $210 plans.
Unlock before you leave the coverage area
Straight Talk phones fall under the Verizon Value unlocking policy. A phone activated on the Verizon network on or after January 20, 2026 must have 365 days of active and paid service before it is unlocked, and the timer pauses during any suspension. The military exception: customers “that receive relocation orders outside of the Verizon Value coverage area can request early unlocking,” even inside the lock period. After activation, email your deployment documents to tf-mb-unlockingrequest2@verizon.com. An unlocked phone takes a local SIM overseas, which matters because Straight Talk’s $10 Global Calling Card only works for calls that start in the U.S. or Puerto Rico.
End Straight Talk service under 50 U.S.C. § 3956
- Confirm the orders qualify: 90 days or more, to a place your plan does not support, and a plan bought before the orders. The eligibility rules explain who counts.
- Email your orders to tf-mb-unlockingrequest2@verizon.com for the early unlock while the line is active.
- Turn off Auto Pay, which buys the next plan up to 72 hours before your Service End Date, and do not add plans to Reserve.
- Call Customer Care at 1-877-430-2355 to terminate, then send written notice to VZValueNOD@verizon.com, the email its terms give for notices, with your orders, the termination date, a request to keep the number under § 3956(c), and, on a multi-month plan, a refund request under § 3956(f). The letter generator drafts it.
- Do not port the number out while a refund is pending. Straight Talk’s terms say a port-out deactivates the line at once and forfeits unused days.
- Put day 60 after termination, for the refund, and the 90-day window that starts on the last day of your relocation, for the number, in the deadline checker. If Straight Talk refuses, its terms require a written dispute notice to VZValueNOD@verizon.com 60 days before arbitration.
Straight Talk shares an owner with Verizon, but none of Verizon’s postpaid military programs appear on Straight Talk’s pages; the Verizon page covers those. Guard and Reserve members on qualifying duty should read the Guard and Reserve guide. The PCS money moves list covers the rest of the move, free help is on the legal help page, and the statute’s full text is on the § 3956 page.

Frequently asked questions
Does Straight Talk have a military discount?
Not one you can use today. Straight Talk's plans and deals pages, read October 10, 2026, list no military or veteran price. Its site code still references ID.me military-discount pages under straighttalk.com/deals/military-discount, but those addresses returned a 404 not-found page on October 10, 2026. Its Veterans Day deals page describes savings around November 11, states no military eligibility rule, and, as read that day, says the sale is over. Silver Unlimited lists at $45 a month for every buyer. The military rule Straight Talk does publish is an early phone unlock for members with relocation orders.
Can I suspend Straight Talk while I am deployed?
Straight Talk's site and terms show no suspension or pause for deployment. Its terms say that if you do not redeem a new plan before your Service End Date, your account is deactivated on that date and you may lose your number; a reactivated account may be assigned a new number. Your choices are to prepay, either with a 1 Year Plan at $360 or plans stacked in Straight Talk Reserve, or to terminate under 50 U.S.C. § 3956 and rely on § 3956(c), which protects the number if you re-subscribe within the 90-day period beginning on the last day of a relocation of three years or less.
Can I get a refund on a Straight Talk 1 Year Plan if I get orders?
Straight Talk's terms say plans are non-refundable. Federal law can override that for a plan bought before the orders. Section 3956(f) requires a refund within 60 days of amounts paid for a period after the termination date, except the rest of the monthly or similar billing period in which you terminate. Counting the $360 plan as $30 a month, terminating in month four leaves months five through twelve, $240, to claim. Straight Talk can argue the 365-day plan is one billing period, because its terms put multi-month plans outside the 30-day cycle, and then nothing comes back.
How do I unlock a Straight Talk phone for deployment?
Straight Talk follows the Verizon Value unlocking policy. A phone activated on the Verizon network on or after January 20, 2026 needs 365 days of active and paid service before it is unlocked on request; phones activated earlier needed 60 days. Members with relocation orders outside the Verizon Value coverage area can ask for an early unlock during the lock period. After the phone is activated, email your deployment documents to tf-mb-unlockingrequest2@verizon.com, the address on Straight Talk's Device Unlock page, read October 10, 2026.
Will I keep my Straight Talk number if I terminate under the SCRA?
The statute says yes, with conditions. Under 50 U.S.C. § 3956(c), a provider must let you keep your number if your relocation is three years or less and you re-subscribe during the 90 days that begin on the last day of the relocation. Straight Talk's site and terms show no process for this, and its own terms say a reactivated account may get a new number. So your written notice, the orders, and the confirmation you get when you terminate are the record. Ask for the number hold in the notice itself.
