Kinetic Internet Military: No Fee Month to Month, a 30-Day Notice Rule
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
Kinetic, which its own site says was formerly Kinetic by Windstream, does not publish a military discount, and its month-to-month internet customers owe no fee to leave. That makes orders look like a non-event. They are not quite. Kinetic’s online terms, effective April 1, 2026 (read October 10, 2026), carry a 30-day notice rule, a no-proration rule, and a $100 modem charge, and each one can take money from a member who moves on short notice.
Kinetic’s terms beside § 3956
Section 3956 lets you end an internet contract signed before “military orders to relocate for a period of not less than 90 days to a location that does not support the contract.” Notice goes in writing or electronically with a copy of the orders “together with the date on which the service is to be terminated.” The phone, cable, and internet guide walks the whole section. Kinetic’s paper against it, checked October 10, 2026:
| Item | Kinetic’s terms say | On qualifying orders |
|---|---|---|
| Military discount | None; only $5 a month for AutoPay | Not a federal right |
| Fee to leave, month to month | None, cancel by phone at 1-800-347-1991 | None |
| Fee to leave, fixed term | 100% of monthly charges times months left, Section 7(c) | Barred, § 3956(e)(1) |
| Notice | At least 30 days before the effective date, Section 7(d) | The date in your notice, § 3956(a)(3) |
| Last month | Charged in full, no proration or credit | Current billing period kept; later prepaid amounts back within 60 days, § 3956(f) |
| Rented modem | Back within 30 days or $100 | Back within 10 days of disconnection, § 3956(e)(3) |
Kinetic’s own terms disagree with themselves. The opening paragraph says month-to-month customers “may cancel at any time without penalty by phone,” while Section 7(d) says either side may terminate “by providing notice at least thirty (30) days prior to the effective date of termination.” Quote the first sentence and the statute in your notice, and give a stop date at the end of the current billing cycle.
The 30-day rule, in dollars
Kinetic’s offer conditions list Fiber Internet at $39.99 a month with AutoPay for 300 Mbps service, noting some locations qualify at $49.99, and give the standard rate for a Kinetic Wi-Fi Gateway as $10.99 a month when it is not included in the plan. Kinetic bills “one month in advance.”
Say your orders arrive and you call with 10 days left in a billing cycle. Under Section 7(d), a 30-day notice lands the effective date 20 days into the next cycle, and because Section 7(d) says you “will be charged for the full last month of Service with no proration or credit,” you pay that next month too: $39.99, plus $10.99 if the gateway bills separately, or $50.98. Miss the modem return by a day past 30 and add $100. That is $150.98 on an account with no termination fee at all.
Under § 3956 the effective date is the one in your notice. The provider keeps “the remainder of the monthly or similar billing period in which the termination occurs,” and refunds anything paid for later periods within 60 days of the termination date. The 30-day notice question is not academic: it is what the Justice Department alleged ADT imposed on at least 3,400 servicemembers in a case settled in April 2026.
If you signed a term
Some Kinetic customers did commit: bundles, older promotions, and DISH packages sold through Kinetic. Section 7(c) sets the charge at 100% of the monthly recurring charges multiplied by the months remaining in the term. Check your Service Order or first bill: if neither names a length of time, Section 7(d) treats the service as month to month. On an illustrative $50 a month with 12 months left, that is $600. This is the charge § 3956(e)(1) bars on qualifying orders. DISH service sold through Kinetic follows DISH’s own agreements, and Kinetic’s terms add a cancellation fee based on the months left in a DISH commitment; the DISH page covers that contract.
Kinetic’s current offers use price guarantees instead of terms: 1 year on 300 Mbps and 1 Gig plans, 2 years on 2 Gig, 3 years on Fiber Max. After “relocation, change or suspension of service,” the offer conditions say rates are subject to change, and the service terms say a Price Lock “may be void if you move, even if the move is within Kinetic Service locations.”
Hold, move, or cancel
Kinetic gives a deploying member a third option. Its Seasonal Plan article (dated March 20, 2023, live October 10, 2026) holds internet and bundled voice for 1 to 6 months at “a reduced rate of $10,” keeps a 1 Mb line up for cameras, and turns service back on with one call and no reconnect fee. Your promotional rate keeps its original end date while you are away, so a hold can quietly burn a promotion. The offer conditions also make rates subject to change after a “suspension of service,” so ask whether a hold counts as one. Kinetic’s article does not say whether the $10 is monthly; if it is, six months costs $60. The hold is Kinetic’s program, not an SCRA right.
Moving is free, per Kinetic’s moving page, and it adds that if Kinetic is not available at the new address it will help you cancel. For a PCS outside Kinetic’s footprint or overseas, cancelling under § 3956 is the clean path; the PCS money moves list covers the other contracts the same orders reach.
Cancel Kinetic on military orders
- Confirm the orders qualify: 90 days or more, to a place Kinetic cannot serve, issued after you signed up. The eligibility checker covers who counts, including Guard and Reserve members.
- In the GoKinetic portal, note your plan, monthly charge, billing date, and whether you rent the modem or gateway.
- Call 1-800-347-1991. Say you are terminating under 50 U.S.C. § 3956, give a stop date at the end of the current billing cycle, and ask for modem return instructions in writing.
- Send written notice with a copy of your orders and the same stop date. The letter generator drafts it; mail a copy to 4005 N. Rodney Parham Rd., Little Rock, AR 72212, Attn: Executive Customer Relations, with tracking.
- Return the modem or gateway within 10 days of disconnection and keep the receipt.
- Check the last bill. Anything charged for a period after your stop date, beyond the billing period you ended in, is due back within 60 days. If you return, the deadline checker tracks the 90-day period, beginning on the last day of your relocation, in which § 3956(e)(2) bars a reinstatement charge.

Frequently asked questions
Does Kinetic by Windstream have a military discount?
Not one Kinetic publishes. Its Discounts and Bundles page lists a $5 monthly AutoPay credit, and its offer conditions add new-customer bill credits, a referral reward, and a $20 monthly credit with AT&T wireless; none mentions military service (read October 10, 2026). Search results still surface a 2023 promotion from Kinetic's Military Appreciation Month, but it does not appear on Kinetic's site today. The federal protection that matters is 50 U.S.C. § 3956, which lets you end the internet contract on qualifying orders without a termination charge.
Does Kinetic charge a fee to cancel internet?
Not on month-to-month service. Kinetic's support answer says it does not charge a termination fee when you cancel, and the opening of its online terms, effective April 1, 2026, says month-to-month customers may cancel at any time without penalty by phone at 1-800-347-1991. Customers who agreed to a fixed term are different: Section 7(c) of the same terms sets liquidated damages equal to 100% of the monthly recurring charges times the months left. On qualifying military orders, § 3956(e)(1) bars that charge.
Can I cancel Kinetic internet online?
Kinetic's terms and help pages name a phone call, 1-800-347-1991, as the way month-to-month customers cancel, and no online cancellation form appeared on the pages read October 10, 2026. For a cancellation on orders, call and then put it in writing, because § 3956(a)(3) requires written or electronic notice with a copy of your orders and the date service should end. Kinetic's terms tell customers to put an unresolved dispute in writing to 4005 N. Rodney Parham Rd., Little Rock, AR 72212, Attn: Executive Customer Relations; send a copy of your notice there with tracking.
Should I pause Kinetic or cancel it before a deployment?
Kinetic's Seasonal Plan help article, dated March 20, 2023 and live on October 10, 2026, lets existing customers on qualifying plans hold internet and bundled voice for 1 to 6 months at "a reduced rate of $10" (it does not say per month, so ask), keeping a 1 Mb connection for cameras and no reconnect fee. A promotional rate keeps its original end date while you are on hold. For a deployment of 6 months or less with a good rate you want to keep, the hold can beat cancelling. For anything longer, or a PCS, cancel under § 3956.
How do I return my Kinetic modem?
Kinetic's service terms say a rented modem must be returned within 30 days after service ends, or Kinetic charges $100 and keeps any unrefunded deposit or advance payment. Its offer conditions say the same $100 may apply to eero gateways and extenders. Fiber installs also include an optical network terminal. Ask Kinetic on the cancellation call for return instructions in writing. On a § 3956 cancellation, the statute gives you 10 days after disconnection to return provider-owned equipment, so ship it the week service ends.
