DISH Military Discount: $240 Stars & Stripes Pack, $480 ETF Risk
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
DISH does have a military offer, and it is a set of extras; the offer page lists no price reduction. Sign up through DISH’s military page and you get the Stars & Stripes Pack (DISH puts its value at $240 over two years), a free On Demand movie each month, a Hopper DVR, and a 2-year price guarantee (read October 9, 2026). You also sign a 2-year contract with an early termination fee. That fee, not the perks, is where the money is if orders come before the two years are up.
What the military offer includes, and what it costs
| Item | DISH’s terms | Dollar figure |
|---|---|---|
| Stars & Stripes Pack | Added at no cost; American Heroes Channel, Smithsonian Channel, more | $240 over 2 years, per DISH |
| Movie night | First On Demand rental each month free | Not priced |
| Hopper upgrade | DVR upgraded to a Hopper for DISH Anywhere streaming | Upfront fees may apply based on credit |
| Price guarantee | 2 years on the package and first Hopper 3 | America’s Top 120 at $94.99/mo |
| After 2 years | Then-market price | Currently $107.99/mo for Top 120 |
| Commitment | 2 years, credit check, eAutoPay | ETF $20 per month left, max $480 |
| DISH Protect Silver | If selected, billed after 6 months unless you call to cancel | $12.99/mo |
Read on dish.com October 9, 2026. The offer is for new and qualifying former customers.
Do the math on the perk. $240 over 24 months is $10 a month of channels you did not pay for. The ETF on that same contract can reach $480, and the Hopper 3 that comes with it carries a $350 charge if it never comes back. One set of orders in year one can wipe out the perk several times over unless you use the federal rule.
DISH’s contract says a move does not excuse you
DISH’s Digital Home Advantage agreement (dated September 10, 2026) is blunt. The fee applies if your service “is disconnected for ANY REASON,” and it gives the example of cancelling “because you move to a location where you cannot receive your DISH service.” It adds that you are still bound by the agreement if you change your residence. There is no military exception anywhere in it or in the Residential Customer Agreement.
Section 3956 overrides that for service members. You can end a satellite TV contract you signed before your orders once those orders relocate you for 90 days or more to a place the contract does not support, and the provider “may not impose an early termination charge.” The full contract guide explains the rest of the section.
| Issue | DISH’s agreements | § 3956 |
|---|---|---|
| Moving where DISH cannot serve | ETF applies | ETF barred on qualifying orders, § 3956(e)(1) |
| How to cancel | Phone, onlinecancellation@dish.com, or mail to P.O. Box 9033, Littleton, CO | Written or electronic notice with orders and an end date, § 3956(a)(3) |
| Refunds | Charges “are non-refundable” | Amounts paid past the current billing period refunded within 60 days, § 3956(f) |
| Equipment return | Within 30 days; up to $20 per return box or label | Within 10 days of disconnect, § 3956(e)(3) |
DISH’s email address matters here. The statute accepts electronic notice, and DISH’s own agreement lists onlinecancellation@dish.com as a cancellation channel, effective no sooner than the day DISH receives it. An email with your orders attached is a dated record.
Worked example. You took the military offer at $94.99 a month with a Hopper 3. Ten months in, you get orders to Korea. By DISH’s formula the ETF is 14 months × $20 = $280. Add $350 for the Hopper 3 and $49 for the LNBF if they are not returned. That is $679 at stake. With notice under § 3956 and the equipment back within 10 days, it is $0 in termination and equipment charges. You still owe the current month’s bill and any return-box fee (up to $20 a box) if DISH mails you boxes.
How to end DISH on orders
Terminate DISH under § 3956
- Write a notice with your DISH account number, the date service should end, and “I am terminating under 50 U.S.C. § 3956; no early termination fee applies.” The letter generator drafts it.
- Email the notice and a copy of your orders to onlinecancellation@dish.com. For a paper trail, also mail them to DISH Network L.L.C., Customer Service Center, P.O. Box 9033, Littleton, CO 80160-9033.
- Call 800-333-3474 to confirm receipt and ask DISH to schedule equipment removal or send return boxes. DISH charges up to $20 per box or label and a service-call rate for in-home removal, so ask the price first.
- Return every receiver, smart card, remote, wireless access point, and the LNBF from the dish within 10 days of disconnect. DISH says you carry the shipping risk, so use tracked shipping and keep the receipt.
- Check the final bill for $0 in early termination fees. Mark the 60-day refund date for anything paid past the current cycle with the deadline checker.
Things members trip on at DISH
The roof part is leased. DIRECTV lets you keep the dish and its LNB; DISH lists the LNBF, the signal receiver at the end of the dish’s arm, as leased equipment. If you decline DISH’s paid removal and climb up yourself, DISH’s agreement says the fall risk is yours.
A stateside PCS is the hard case. DISH sells itself on nationwide availability, and the statute needs a place the contract “does not support.” Deployments, ship duty, and orders overseas are the strong cases. For a move inside the U.S., ask DISH in writing whether it can serve the new address before you rely on § 3956.
Pause carries a price and a cost. DISH Pause is $5 a month for 3, 6, or 9 months, and your contract freezes with it. DISH says promotional credits and offers are forfeited on a pause. Ask whether that includes the military pack before you choose it.
Household eligibility is not household rights. The military offer covers household members, but § 3956 runs to the service member and, in limited cases, spouses and dependents. If the account is in a spouse’s name, read the spouses and families guide before you send the notice. Orders, not a status certificate, are what the statute requires for a termination; the DMDC certificate guide explains the difference.
The rest of the PCS checklist, from the lease to the moving entitlements, is in PCS money moves. Deploying instead? The deployment readiness checklist covers the other bills.

Frequently asked questions
What is the DISH military discount?
It is a package of extras, not a price cut. DISH's military offer page (read October 9, 2026) adds the Stars & Stripes Pack, which it values at $240 over two years, your first On Demand movie rental each month free, an upgrade to a Hopper DVR for streaming through DISH Anywhere, and a 2-year TV price guarantee. English packages on the military page start at $94.99 a month for America's Top 120, and the page lists no price reduction. It is for new and qualifying former customers and needs credit qualification, eAutoPay, and a 2-year commitment.
How does DISH verify military status?
DISH's own pages say only that verification is required. Its news page (published September 25, 2024) says the military deal covers military members and their households, and the offer page sends you to Add Offer or to 1-877-621-0194. Neither page names a verification service or lists the documents it accepts, so do not rely on a vendor name from a coupon site. Have proof of service ready, ask the agent what DISH will accept, and confirm the Stars and Stripes Pack appears on your first bill.
Can I cancel DISH without the early termination fee if I get orders?
Under federal law, yes, when the orders relocate you for 90 days or more to a place your DISH contract does not support and you signed before the orders. Section 3956(e)(1) bars the early termination charge. DISH's own Digital Home Advantage agreement, dated September 10, 2026, says the fee applies if you disconnect for any reason, including a move to a place DISH cannot serve, and has no military exception. Cite the statute in your notice.
What does DISH charge if I do not return the equipment?
DISH's agreement lists $49 for an LNBF, up to $100 for a Hopper, Hopper Plus, or any Joey, $150 for a Hopper Duo, $300 for a Hopper with Sling, and $350 for a Hopper 3. The LNBF is the signal receiver at the end of the dish's arm, so part of the dish is leased too. DISH allows 30 days after disconnection, but § 3956(e)(3) requires return within 10 days when you terminate under the statute. DISH refunds a paid charge once it receives the equipment.
Should I use DISH Pause for a deployment?
Only for a short one. DISH Pause costs $5 a month and runs 3, 6, or 9 months. Your contract pauses with the service and picks up where it left off, so the months you owe are still waiting when you return. DISH also says any promotional credits or offers are forfeited when you pause, so ask whether that includes the military pack and price guarantee. For a deployment longer than 9 months, terminating under § 3956 usually costs less.
