Planet Fitness Military: No Listed Discount, $0 Buyout on Orders

Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA

Planet Fitness publishes no military discount, but a PCS still has a dollar figure attached: the $58 buyout fee its own FAQ says applies when a membership with a minimum term ends early. Federal law takes that fee off the table. Under 50 U.S.C. § 3956(e)(1), a gym may not impose an early termination charge on a membership you end because of qualifying orders. The rest of this page is the Planet Fitness version of that rule: its plans, its notice windows, its annual fee, and the places where the statute beats its terms.

What Planet Fitness offers military members

Nothing national. On October 9, 2026 the customer service FAQ, the membership page, and the member perks page had no military discount, rate, or pass, and planetfitness.com/military returned a 404. The perks list is retail partner deals. The offers page for the Killeen, Texas club, the one outside Fort Hood, showed three plans and no military pricing.

Killeen, TX planMonthlyStartup feeAnnual feeCommitment
PF Black Card$24.99$0$49None
Classic$15$59$4912 months
Classic No Commitment$20$59$49None

Read on planetfitness.com October 9, 2026; the page said the offers expire October 16, and that the annual fee bills on or shortly after December 1 at this club.

Planet Fitness’s footer says its locations are independently owned and operated and that prices vary by location. A military rate, where one exists, is that franchisee’s local deal, so the front desk is the only place to ask. Look at the Classic row: the cheap $15 price is the one that carries the 12-month commitment. That plan is where § 3956 earns its keep, because the no-commitment plans already cancel without a fee.

Planet Fitness terms against § 3956

Section 3956 lets a servicemember end a gym membership or fitness program signed before the orders arrived, once those orders relocate the member for at least 90 days to a location that does not support the contract. Since 2023, a contract signed after PCS orders and then blocked by a stop-movement order also qualifies (§ 3956(a)(1), (b)(1)(E)). The service contract explainer walks the rule for every provider. This is how Planet Fitness’s published terms line up with it.

Planet Fitness column read on its FAQ and Killeen offers pages October 9, 2026; statute read the same day in the 2024 edition on GovInfo.

The 8-day rule is a processing window Planet Fitness set for itself, not a limit in the statute. If your notice lands with five days to go and the next month drafts anyway, that payment covers time after your termination date, and § 3956(f) says it comes back within 60 days. Charging past a lawful termination date is the pattern the Justice Department settled with ADT in 2026 (case record). The cleaner fix is to deliver early so the draft never runs.

The dollar math on a 12-month Classic plan

Take a member who joined the Killeen club on the Classic plan in March 2026: $59 startup, $15 a month, a 12-month commitment, and the $49 annual fee billing on or shortly after December 1. PCS orders arrive in early November, after November’s dues have drafted. For this illustration, assume three monthly payments remain on the commitment; your agreement shows the real count.

Path after the orders arriveCost to leave
Ride out the commitment$45 in dues plus the $49 annual fee: $94
Pay Planet Fitness’s buyout$58, plus $49 if the annual fee bills first: up to $107
End it under § 3956 with notice by November 23$0 buyout, $0 annual fee, dues stop after the current billing period

Figures exclude tax. November 23 is 8 days before December 1, the window Planet Fitness’s FAQ sets for stopping the annual fee.

These are small numbers next to a lease. They are also the entire cost of leaving, and none of it is owed. If you hold a no-commitment plan, like the Killeen Black Card or Classic No Commitment, there is no buyout to fight; your money question is only the annual fee date and any draft that runs after you leave.

Black Card, transfers, and a town with its own Planet Fitness

The statute’s test is orders to “a location that does not support the contract.” A Classic membership is a one-club contract; the Killeen offer says it can only be used at that location. Orders to Fort Bragg or Germany leave that club behind, which is the plain case.

A Black Card is different. It opens any of the 2,900+ Planet Fitness locations, so if your orders land you in a town with a Planet Fitness, a club could argue the contract is still supported there. The statute does not define the phrase, and Planet Fitness has published no position. Two practical consequences follow.

First, if you want to keep training at Planet Fitness, a transfer may beat a termination. Planet Fitness allows an online transfer once you have been a member for 90 days, owe nothing, pay monthly rather than Paid in Full, and have not transferred in the last 90 days. Its policy limits transfers to clubs in the same country and says a fee may apply.

Second, orders overseas fall outside the transfer policy, and a deployment leaves no club to transfer to. Either way § 3956 is the clean exit.

How to cancel Planet Fitness on orders

End a Planet Fitness membership under § 3956

  1. Log into the member portal and write down your next billing date and your annual fee date. Planet Fitness says both are there or on your membership agreement.
  2. Write a one-page notice: your name, PF Club Pass number, home club, the end date you want, and “I am terminating this membership under 50 U.S.C. § 3956.” The letter generator has a gym option that drafts it.
  3. Attach a copy of your PCS or deployment orders showing a relocation of 90 days or more.
  4. Deliver it at least 8 days before the next draft. Hand it to the front desk and ask for a dated copy, or mail it to the home club with tracking. Planet Fitness lists both channels.
  5. If a $58 buyout appears, answer in writing that § 3956(e)(1) bars early termination charges and ask for the reversal.
  6. Check the next bank statement. Dues or an annual fee for time after your end date must come back within 60 days under § 3956(f).
  7. Rejoining within 90 days after the relocation ends? Ask the club to drop the startup fee under § 3956(e)(2).

Spouses, Guard, and Reserve

The right belongs to the servicemember. A spouse’s own membership is covered only in the cases § 3956(a)(4) lists: the member died in service, suffered a catastrophic injury or illness in service, or the spouse accompanies the member after a stop-movement order. On a routine PCS a spouse on a 12-month Classic plan follows Planet Fitness’s normal terms, so price the transfer before paying the buyout. The spouse and family guide covers what the SCRA does give spouses in their own right.

Guard and Reserve members performing military service are treated as covered by § 3956(a)(4)(C), but the trigger is still orders to relocate for 90 days or more. A drill weekend does not qualify; a mobilization usually does. Guard and Reserve coverage explains which orders count.

A gym contract is the smallest bill a PCS touches. The apartment lease is usually the largest, and PCS money moves covers the allowances in between.

The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3956

Termination of certain consumer contracts: gym memberships and fitness programs: read the statute , or read § 3956 in plain English, with its enforcement record .

Frequently asked questions

Does Planet Fitness have a military discount?

Not at the corporate level. On October 9, 2026, Planet Fitness's FAQ, membership page, and member perks page listed no military discount, rate, or pass, and planetfitness.com/military returned a 404. The offers page for the Killeen, Texas club outside Fort Hood showed no military pricing either. Planet Fitness says its locations are independently owned and operated and that prices vary by location, so any military deal is a single club's local offer. Ask the front desk. The lowest published price is the Classic plan from $15 a month plus a $49 annual fee.

Can I cancel Planet Fitness with military orders?

Yes, if the orders relocate you for at least 90 days to a place your membership cannot serve and you signed up before you received them. 50 U.S.C. § 3956(b)(1)(E) names gym memberships and fitness programs, and § 3956(e)(1) says the gym may not impose an early termination charge. That reaches the $58 buyout fee Planet Fitness's FAQ says ends a minimum-term membership early. Deliver written notice, a copy of the orders, and your chosen end date to the home club.

What is the Planet Fitness military pass?

Planet Fitness's corporate site has no product by that name; a check of its FAQ, perks, and membership pages on October 9, 2026 found none. The closest thing is the PF Black Card, which opens any of the 2,900+ Planet Fitness locations, from $24.99 a month. That helps on TDY or a short school away from home. For a PCS, the published options are a home club transfer, allowed after 90 days of membership within the same country, or ending the membership under § 3956.

Do I still owe the $49 annual fee if I cancel on orders?

Planet Fitness says the club must receive your request at least 8 days before the annual fee date to stop that charge, so time your notice ahead of it. If the fee already billed, 50 U.S.C. § 3956(f) says any fee paid for a period extending past your termination date must be refunded within 60 days, except the rest of the current monthly or similar billing period. Planet Fitness publishes no rule for prorating its annual fee, so ask for the unused share in writing and cite § 3956(f).

Can my spouse cancel their own Planet Fitness membership on my orders?

The federal right belongs to the servicemember. Under 50 U.S.C. § 3956(a)(4), a spouse or dependent is treated as covered only if the member died in service, suffered a catastrophic injury or illness in service, or the spouse accompanies the member after a stop-movement order. On an ordinary PCS, a spouse's own 12-month Classic plan follows Planet Fitness's normal terms, which include the $58 buyout. A home club transfer may cost less, and your state's health club law is worth a check too.
