DIRECTV Military: 9-Month Deployment Suspension vs. the $480 ETF
Part of: The Complete Guide to the SCRA
DIRECTV has no military discount on its own site. On October 9, 2026, directv.com/military returned a “Page Not Found (404)”, the deals page never used the words military, veteran, or service member, and DIRECTV Support’s search returned zero results for “military.” The discounts you see on coupon sites are not DIRECTV’s published offers. The money on a DIRECTV account with orders in hand is somewhere else: a 24-month satellite contract, a $20-a-month early termination fee, and $45 to $135 for every leased box you forget to send back.
What DIRECTV’s contract costs you
DIRECTV’s Residential Terms of Service and Equipment Lease Agreement both carry an effective date of August 19, 2026. Neither mentions military service. The numbers that apply:
| Item | DIRECTV’s terms | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Satellite term, new customers | 24-month commitment | ETF $20 per month left, max $480 |
| Satellite, existing customer adds or upgrades equipment, no pro install | New 12-month commitment | ETF $10 per month left |
| Satellite, moving to a new address | New 12-month commitment (24 if new gear needs a pro install) | $20 per month left |
| Internet-delivered DIRECTV, new customers | No term commitment | No ETF |
| Minimum package during a term | Base programming of at least $29.99 a month | Dropping below triggers the ETF |
| Unreturned receiver, Genie Mini | Per box | $45 |
| Unreturned Gemini, Gemini Air | Per box | $120 |
| Unreturned DVR, HD DVR, Genie, Genie 2 | Per box | $135 |

Note the mover row. If you take DIRECTV satellite to your next duty station, the move resets your commitment to at least 12 months, or 24 if new equipment needs a professional install. DIRECTV keeps whichever term is longer, old or new. Those contracts are signed after your orders, so a later relocation needs new orders to reach them under § 3956(b)(2).
Worked example: orders to Japan in month 7
You signed up for satellite with a Genie HD DVR and two Genie Minis. Seven months in, PCS orders to Japan arrive.
- Early termination fee by DIRECTV’s formula: 17 months left × $20 = $340.
- Unreturned equipment if the boxes ship in your household goods: $135 + $45 + $45 = $225.
- Total exposure: $565, before the last month’s bill.
Section 3956 lets you end a satellite TV contract signed before your orders once those orders relocate you for 90 days or more to a place the contract does not support. Japan is outside DIRECTV’s U.S. service; its moving page even limits the DIRECTV app to the U.S., excluding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The ETF goes to $0 under § 3956(e)(1). The $225 goes to $0 if the boxes go back on time: within 10 days of disconnect under § 3956(e)(3), which also lands inside DIRECTV’s own 21-day window. You still pay the current billing cycle: DIRECTV ends service on the last day of the cycle, and § 3956(f) lets a provider keep that month. The contract cancellation guide walks the full section.
Suspend or terminate: the deployment decision
DIRECTV’s support article lists “military deployment” as a reason to suspend satellite service, and the suspension is free. Its limits decide whether it fits:
| DIRECTV satellite suspension | Termination under § 3956 | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 30 days to 9 months | Permanent |
| Cost | No fee | No ETF |
| Your contract | Extended by the suspension; 6 months left stays 6 months left | Ends |
| Who can use it | Account 2+ months old, in good standing, no balance due; some special offers excluded | Contract signed before orders; 90-day or longer relocation to a place it does not support |
| Equipment | Stays in the house | Back to DIRECTV within 10 days |
| Coming back | Pick up where you left off | No reinstatement charge if you re-subscribe within 90 days after the relocation ends, beyond normal install and equipment charges, § 3956(e)(2) |
A 6-month deployment: suspend if the house will sit empty, or keep the service running for family. A 12-month deployment, an unaccompanied tour overseas, or an OCONUS PCS: the suspension runs out and leaves the contract waiting for you, so terminate.
The weak case is a stateside PCS. DIRECTV’s moving page assumes a new dish gets installed at your new address, and the statute only reaches a location that “does not support the contract.” Ask first: DIRECTV’s moving page lists a phone line for customers in a contract who cannot get service at the new address. Get the answer in writing.
How to cancel DIRECTV on orders
End DIRECTV satellite service under § 3956
- Find your term end date in your account, or ask the agent. You need it to know what ETF is at stake.
- Write a notice with your account number, the date service should end, a copy of your orders, and the line “I am terminating under 50 U.S.C. § 3956; no early termination fee applies.” The letter generator drafts it.
- Call the cancellation number printed in DIRECTV’s Residential Terms of Service, and ask where to send the notice and orders. DIRECTV’s pages showed different numbers on different visits on October 9, 2026, so use the one on the page or bill in front of you. In a state that requires online cancellation, such as New York, Illinois, or Colorado, you can also cancel online. Keep the agent’s name and a reference number.
- Take the receivers, power cords, and remotes to a FedEx Office Print and Ship Center with your account number, or ask DIRECTV to mail a box with a prepaid label. Do it within 10 days of disconnect and keep the receipt.
- Leave the dish and cabling. DIRECTV says outside equipment is yours.
- Check the final statement: no ETF, and no non-return fee. The deadline checker tracks the 60-day refund window for anything prepaid past the current cycle.
Things members trip on at DIRECTV
Remotes. DIRECTV’s lease agreement asks you to return remotes and power cords with each box. One FAQ on its cancel page says remotes are yours to keep. Send them anyway; it costs nothing and closes the argument.
Internet DIRECTV is a different product. If you stream DIRECTV over your own internet with a Gemini box, new customers have no term commitment. Customers who started before April 13, 2025 may have one; DIRECTV says to check “see term details” in your account. Whether § 3956 reaches that service at all is unsettled, because its definition of covered TV requires a system the provider owns or controls, and your broadband is not DIRECTV’s. A pause of up to 3 months is free.
The card on file gets charged. DIRECTV bills the ETF and non-return fees straight to your payment method. Dispute in writing before you leave, not after the charge posts.
Guard and Reserve orders count. The statute treats reserve component members on qualifying orders the same way; see the Guard and Reserve guide. If DIRECTV refuses a valid termination, the common violations guide shows how those disputes usually go, and an SCRA attorney can take it further. The deployment checklist covers the other bills.
The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3956
Termination of certain consumer contracts: mobile, landline, internet, TV, gym, and home security: read the statute , or read § 3956 in plain English, with its enforcement record .
Frequently asked questions
Does DIRECTV have a military discount?
Not on its own site. On October 9, 2026, directv.com/military returned a 404 page, the deals page and site map had no mention of military, veterans, or service members, and a search of DIRECTV Support for "military" returned zero results. Coupon and military-benefit sites still advertise DIRECTV military discounts, but DIRECTV does not publish them. Ask a sales agent to put any military price in writing before you sign a 24-month satellite agreement, because the agreement, not the ad, sets what you owe.
How much is the DIRECTV early termination fee?
DIRECTV's Equipment Lease Agreement (version 10.3, effective August 19, 2026) charges $20 for every month left on the term commitment, and all new satellite customers have a 24-month commitment, so the maximum is $480. Cancel after 14 months and it is $200. Existing satellite customers who add or upgrade equipment without a professional install get a 12-month term at $10 a month remaining. DIRECTV charges the fee to the card on file. Section 3956(e)(1) bars it when you terminate on qualifying orders.
Can I suspend DIRECTV for a deployment?
Satellite accounts in good standing that are at least two months old can be suspended for 30 days to 9 months with no fee, and DIRECTV's support article names military deployment as a reason. Call the number on that article or start a chat there; DIRECTV's pages showed different phone numbers on different visits on October 9, 2026. You cannot suspend with a balance due, some special offers cannot be suspended, and your service agreement is extended by the length of the suspension. Internet-delivered DIRECTV can be paused for 1, 2, or 3 months at no charge from the My TV Package page.
Does the SCRA cover DIRECTV STREAM?
Not clearly. Section 3956 covers multichannel video programming service, which it defines as video from a multichannel video programming distributor delivered over a system the distributor owns or controls. Satellite service fits. DIRECTV via internet travels over your broadband connection, which DIRECTV does not own, so the federal definition does not clearly reach it. In practice it rarely matters: DIRECTV says new internet-delivered customers have no term commitment, so there is no ETF to fight.
What DIRECTV equipment do I have to return, and by when?
The leased receivers, Genie Minis, Gemini boxes, and access cards, with their power cords and remotes. The dish, mounting hardware, and cabling are yours. DIRECTV allows 21 days from the cancellation Effective Date for satellite and 14 days for internet equipment, but § 3956(e)(3) requires return within 10 days of disconnect when you terminate under the statute. Missing a return costs $45 for a standard receiver or Genie Mini, $120 for a Gemini, and $135 for a DVR or Genie.
