Optimum does nothing special for service members that it puts in writing. There is no military discount, no military desk, and no clause for service members in its residential or mobile terms (read October 9, 2026). Because its internet is now sold month to month, the federal right on orders matters less for the early termination fee and more for the three things that actually move money: a $10 hold for short absences, the billing cycle, and the equipment.

Optimum’s terms against § 3956

ItemOptimum’s terms sayOn qualifying 90-day orders
Military discountNone publishedNot a federal right
ContractHomepage: “no annual contracts”; plans auto-renew monthlyCovers month-to-month and term plans alike
Early termination feeOwed only if you agreed to a promotional “Initial Term”Barred, § 3956(e)(1)

Partly used month”No refunds or credits”Current period excluded from refunds, § 3956(f)
Equipment”Promptly” return; per-device charge or monthly fee until returnedReturn within 10 days of disconnection, § 3956(e)(3)

The fee rows come from Optimum’s Residential General Terms. The cancellation rule sits in the same document: you may cancel up to the last day of the billing period before the one you want to stop, and a request made after a period starts takes effect when that period ends. The offer fine print on optimum.com repeats it, with state exceptions that depend on which regional version of the page you get: West Virginia on one version read October 9, 2026, Connecticut and New Jersey on another.

That rule lines up with the statute rather than against it. Section 3956(f) makes a provider refund amounts paid for time after the termination date, but not “the remainder of the monthly or similar billing period in which the termination occurs.” On a monthly bill, the practical answer is the same under both: pick a disconnect date at the end of a cycle. The section-by-section version of the federal rule is in the phone, cable, and internet guide.

A $10 hold for six months or less

Optimum does not call it a military program, but its Temporary Service Suspension Program fits a short deployment. Its FAQ (read October 9, 2026) lists these terms:

  • Up to six months, once per calendar year, with free enrollment by chat.
  • Internet drops to a 30/3 Mbps cable or 25/25 Mbps fiber connection, with data limits, for $10 a month. Basic TV is $25 a month and phone is $10 a line.
  • No equipment fees or TV surcharges, and you keep your phone number.
  • Regular service and rates return automatically when the program ends. A promotional rate survives unless it expires while you are suspended.
  • Eligibility: good standing, no use of the program in the last calendar year, and a market that “supports seasonal services.”

Worked example. Optimum’s homepage advertised 300 Mbps internet at $35 a month on October 9, 2026, a new-customer price with Auto Pay; your own bill may be higher. Using that $35 as an illustration, six months away at full service is 6 × $35 = $210. Six months on the suspension program is 6 × $10 = $60, a $150 difference, and the gateway stays in the house, so no unreturned-equipment fee is in play. If the house is empty for longer than six months, cancel on the orders instead.

The equipment bill is the real exit fee

Optimum’s terms say that once service ends you lose the right to keep the equipment, that unreturned gear is charged at its current schedule, and that it may “continue to charge Subscriber a monthly Service fee every month until any remaining Equipment is returned.” For someone deploying, that last clause is the trap: a bill that keeps running while you are gone.

Unreturned equipment fees from Optimum’s two rate cards (service before and after January 8, 2024), pricing effective October 1, 2026, checked October 9, 2026 (both list the same fees):

DeviceUnreturned feeStandard monthly rate
Gateway 6$130Wireless Gateway: $15
Wireless modem$100DOCSIS modem: $15
Wireless router$80Not listed
Optimum Extender$75$5
Optimum TV Box$132$15
HD/DVR receiver$345$22
Optimum Stream$70$15

Optimum serves regional versions of these rate cards at the same web addresses. The version behind this table says it does not apply in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, or Hendersonville and West Jefferson, North Carolina. A version served the same day with Bronx and Brooklyn pricing lists the same fees for the Gateway 6, router, extender, TV Box, DVR, and Stream, and adds $250 for a Fiber Gateway 6 Max. Check the card for your address before you pack.

Worked example. A household with a Gateway 6, one extender, and one Optimum TV Box that ships out without returning anything faces $130 + $75 + $132 = $337 in unreturned fees on the final bill. Return all three and the figure is $0. The order is simple: disconnect at the end of a cycle, then return the gear inside 10 days.

Returning gear and moving service

Optimum’s moving page gives two return routes: an Optimum store, where you bring a valid photo ID and the account number, or the mail-in return instructions. Return cables, power cords, and remotes too. If a spouse will handle the drop-off after you leave, make sure they can show the account number; the spouse and family guide covers what else they can do for you.

If the new duty station is in Optimum territory, the same page says Optimum serves internet in 21 states and a transfer keeps your plan when the same plan is offered at the new address, with self-setup or a technician install. If it is not, the page says to call to cancel, return the equipment, and get a referral to another provider. That second case is the plainest example of a “location that does not support the contract” under § 3956(a)(1)(A).

Optimum Mobile and the veteran price

Optimum Mobile lines. Mobile service is covered by § 3956 too. Optimum’s Mobile Service Agreement says cancelling makes any remaining device balance “immediately due” on the final bill. The statute bars an early termination charge but leaves obligations already owed under the contract payable, so plan for the phone balance. The number-retention rule in § 3956(c) lets you keep the number if you re-subscribe within 90 days after a relocation of three years or less ends.

Veterans. Optimum Advantage Internet is listed at $15 a month, with free installation and equipment included. Its eligibility list includes the VA’s Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit and veterans receiving state or federal public assistance. The page carries two versions of the fine print: one says new and existing customers qualify, another limits the offer outside New York to new customers or those disconnected for 60 days. Ask which applies at your address. The SCRA itself generally ends with active service; see whether it covers veterans.

Cancel Optimum on military orders

  1. Six months or less with the house empty: chat with Optimum and enroll in the Temporary Service Suspension Program instead of cancelling. Ask whether your market supports it.
  2. Cancelling: confirm your orders relocate you for 90 days or more and that you signed up before receiving them.
  3. Look up your billing cycle in your optimum.net account and choose the last day of a cycle as the disconnect date.
  4. Cancel by logging in at optimum.net, or call the cancellation number in your area’s offer terms (877-794-2724 on one regional version of optimum.com read October 9, 2026, 877-694-9474 on another). Send written notice with a copy of your orders and that date; the letter generator drafts it. Keep the confirmation number.
  5. If Optimum mentions an early cancellation fee, cite 50 U.S.C. § 3956(e)(1) in writing.
  6. Return the gateway, extenders, TV boxes, remotes, and cords within 10 days at an Optimum store or by mail-in return. Get a receipt or tracking number.
  7. Check the final bill for unreturned-equipment charges or a monthly fee that kept running. Put the date in the deadline checker so you look.

The same orders usually let you break an apartment lease, and the rest of the move is in the PCS money checklist.

The law behind this: 50 U.S.C. § 3956

Termination of certain consumer contracts: internet access, mobile, landline, TV, gym, and home security: read the statute , or read § 3956 in plain English, with its enforcement record .

Frequently asked questions

Does Optimum have a military discount?

Not that it publishes. Optimum's site map lists no military page, and its Residential General Terms and Mobile Service Agreement say nothing about service members or military orders (read October 9, 2026). The closest program is Optimum Advantage Internet, listed at $15 a month, whose eligibility list includes households receiving the VA's Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, and veterans receiving state or federal public assistance.

Can I pause Optimum while I am deployed?

Yes, through Optimum's Temporary Service Suspension Program, once per calendar year for up to six months. Optimum's FAQ lists $10 a month for internet at reduced speed, $25 for basic TV, and $10 a line for phone, with no equipment fees, and service returns to regular rates on its own. You must be in good standing and live in a market that supports seasonal service. Enroll by chat.

Can I cancel Optimum on PCS orders without a fee?

Optimum's current internet offers are month to month, and its homepage advertises no annual contracts, so there is usually no early termination fee to fight. If you signed a promotional term with an early cancellation fee, 50 U.S.C. § 3956(e)(1) bars that charge when orders of 90 days or more move you somewhere Optimum's contract cannot serve. You still owe the current month and must return the equipment.

Will Optimum refund the rest of my month?

No. Optimum's Residential General Terms say payments are nonrefundable with no credit for a partly used period, and that a cancellation takes effect at the end of the then-current billing period. Section 3956(f) does not change that, because the federal refund rule excludes the billing period in which the termination occurs. Set your disconnect date to the last day of a billing cycle.

How do I return Optimum equipment if I am leaving for a deployment?

Optimum's moving page gives two ways: drop it at an Optimum store with a valid photo ID and the account number, or mail it back using Optimum's mail-in return instructions. Return every cable, power cord, and remote. Under 50 U.S.C. § 3956(e)(3), a servicemember who cancels under the statute returns provider-owned gear within 10 days after disconnection, so pack it before you go.

Can I move Optimum to my new duty station?

Only if Optimum serves the new address. Its moving page says it provides internet in 21 states and that a transfer keeps your plan if the same plan is offered there. If Optimum does not serve the new address, the page says to call to cancel and return any required equipment. For customers who started before January 8, 2024, Optimum's rate card says a move or transfer does not by itself switch them to the newer rate card.
